Ah. Well, yep, I found it pretty head-scratch worthy myself, that they had actually published that as the definition.

There are different reasons for a powwow. One was held in honour of a drum (this was for an aboriginal organisation my sister works for). The drum kept cracking during their ceremonies. A shaking tent was done and the elder said the drum wanted to be honoured at its own powwow. So the drum was taken to the powwow grounds at one of the First Nations. The drum was used and honoured there at a powwow. It hasn't cracked since then.

Other times it's a gathering of various bands throughout the treaty area. Powwows (here at least) are a celebration of life, so if there is a death in the community, no powwow is held. We had to cancel our powwow a couple of years ago when there was a death a week before it was slated to happen.
