I realise you followed up with trying them and it not going well. But the reason for doing so is often the thing I've quoted, so to address that particular barnacle...
No horror stories simply means no one has told a horror story in the thread. It doesn't mean the publisher is doing a great job. It's not unusual for the real horror stories to stay hidden until a publisher is falling apart. That's far too late to stop other people from signing up. But red flags are usually there right from the start, which is why they're so important. They're all the warning you get with a lot of these presses.
