Looking ahead to 2016 as we teeter on the crumbling crust of 2015! Post your goals for the first month of the New Year here!

Mine are much the same as last month (and, I confess, the month before that and the month before that and the month before that). But I'm going to throw myself at them with fresh energy.

1) Finish rough draft of Book #3 in my fantasy series
2) Revise manuscript of Book #2 in series
3) Read three books
4) Go for at least three good long nature walks
5) Lose the 5 pounds I put on over the holidays

ETA: 6) Write my Sekrit Solstice short story!

Hello, New Year.

1. Edit one story and two micros. - this is the story I didn't get done last month and two micros that have been sitting for ages and I need to do something with.
2. Edit four chapters UF.
3. Make substantial progress on agent list. - I've been pottering around it too much
4. Min 500 words or 2 pages edited each day.
5. Read one book. - Since I've been struggling with reading and then feeling guilty, I'm hoping if I don't make a goal, I'll feel less guilty. I have to catch up on a bunch of short stories building up in my browser/inbox anyways.

6. *cough* SS(es) Story!!

My goals:

1. Work on getting my current 3 short stories to the 'submittable' stage
2. Finish first draft of my dark fantasy novel
3. Write my SS-SFF-SS story
4. Start two other short stories that have been sitting in my head
5. Finish writing 1 uncompleted short story

I think that about covers it! I already have given myself goals for the next 5 months! That way, I gotta make sure that I stay on schedule so I don't get to far left behind!

  • Plan the revisions to my NaNo project
  • Binge watch: Daredevil, Jessica Jones
  • Buy/download a video game and actually play it
  • Work on shifting wake-up & go-to-sleep times

Already made some progress which makes me happier. I've finished a chapter and started another. I've edited and subbed one of the.... well, the micro is more flash now, but it's one of them. I started to read some shorts, realised I was currently too bitter for shorts, and put them aside for when I could enjoy them :p

1. Edit one story and two micros. 1/3
2. Edit four chapters UF. 1/4
3. Make substantial progress on agent list. Nup.
4. Min 500 words or 2 pages edited each day. Yup.
5. Read one book. 0/1
6. SS(es) Story. Nup.

Well I got in 1293 words, so that's a start. I need to do some more plotting though, because once school starts back up I won't have time to plot and then write like I've been doing these past few days.

Not much writing going on these first few days of January. We are rehearsing "straight sixes" (a union term meaning we're called for a six-hour day without a meal break - we get two ten-minute breaks and one 20-minute break) and I'm finding the schedule makes me cranky and tired. Everyone runs down to the theatre canteen during the 20 minute break, buys something and stuffs it down. I've started bringing food but I'm thinking maybe I need to skip the mad dash to the canteen and eat in the studio where it's quiet. Except then I'm stuck in the studio all day. Anyway...I finished Mighty Fitz by Michael Schumacher (about the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald), so at least that's one area where I'm making progress.

1) Finish rough draft of Book #3 in my fantasy series
2) Revise manuscript of Book #2 in series
3) Read three books - 1 of 3
4) Go for at least three good long nature walks
5) Lose the 5 pounds I put on over the holidays
6) Write Sekrit Solstice short story

Well, last month started strong and then fizzled out. But I did manage to read quite a few books. So these will be my new/old goals:

1) Edit my finished manuscript: I've been working on this more today. The short break actually helped, because I immediately found ways to improve scenes that, last month, I knew needed editing but didn't know how I should edit them. I'm still working on large scale story edits and it's coming together. I'll be working on expanding and developing certain plot threads next.

2) Keep working on my unrelated 10k draft.

3) Work on draft 1 of book 2 of the finished book. I began it on a whim a few days ago.

I've finished another chapter. I've got a draft for my Secret Solstice story, but it might not be my final story. I shall have to see. I like the story, though, and will definitely edit it properly at some point, even if not for Secret Solstice. I read The Twits. So, yeah, doesn't really count as a book, I guess. Unless I don't read any other books this month in which case, I'm totally counting it. Read a whole bunch of shorts and have decided to take a day or two break so I don't burn out. I finished up some additional information on the agents already on my agent list (I'd decided I need another column) but haven't added to it yet.

1. Edit one story and two micros. 1/3
2. Edit four chapters UF. 2/4
3. Make substantial progress on agent list. Nup.
4. Min 500 words or 2 pages edited each day. Yup.
5. Read one book. (1)/1
6. SS(es) Story. Progress.

1) Editing finished manuscript: I finished a large scale edit today! I tossed myself into it and found a renewed and intense love for the characters that leaves me inspired to scratch deeper into their relationship as I edit later parts. There are still a lot of major storytelling edits to do, but for now the story is cohesive (someone can pick it up now and read it straight through and understand it), and I want to keep my edits like that instead of leaping back and forth and leaving gaps. It makes me feel less intimidated.

2) I haven't worked on the new 10k story at all!

3) I'm still in the planning stages of the book 2 I wrote a tentative beginning to. I justify this with the fact that my book 1 edits will impact what happens in book 2 anyway.

4) I finished reading 2 books so far this month, and I've started a really good one called Gullstruck Island! Such a creative book.

It's been kind of a shit week. I got very little accomplished, other than finishing Terry Pratchett's Guards! Guards!, so that's at least one notch in the Goals belt. I have an idea for my Sekrit Solstice story, but no more than that. Since I've got the day off tomorrow, I'm hoping for both a walk and some writing time, although first I have to visit my friendly mechanic to find out why my car's engine light keeps coming on...

1) Finish rough draft of Book #3 in my fantasy series
2) Revise manuscript of Book #2 in series
3) Read three books - 2 of 3
4) Go for at least three good long nature walks
5) Lose the 5 pounds I put on over the holidays
6) Write Sekrit Solstice short story

Hmm, I am not doing well on any of my goals so far.

I might need to actually make an action plan or something :tongue

I finished a third chapter! The next one requires a bunch of writing since it's going to be a new chapter, but hopefully it'll flow easily. I've done a few more agents on my list and fiddled with my query again. I've started putting together a website. It's a bit bad, but it's a start. I've written a little bit of the new possible SS story, but not much. I remembered I bought a Coraline graphic novel adaption a while back and never read it, and I've started that. I love Coraline so the story is fine. I'm not a huge fan of the way the artist does people, but I like his backgrounds/objects.

1. Edit one story and two micros. 1/3
2. Edit four chapters UF. 3/4
3. Make substantial progress on agent list. Some.
4. Min 500 words or 2 pages edited each day. Yup.
5. Read one book. (1)/1
6. SS(es) Story. Progress.

I revamped 3 of my websites. Working on webiste 4 now. I would like to get that one finished by the end of the month, apply for a certain job I have in mind, and then work on my author blog some more. Hopefully by February I'll have updated website 5 (which is the website for my pen name, I write horror and dark fiction over there), and maybe gotten started on website 6, which is my secret project for now.

Anyway, back to writing. I reached all my writing goals last week! YAY.

Since Monday, I wrote 6k more in my WIP, edited 100 pages for a client edit, edited my short story of last week and submitted it to a magazine, and wrote 2 blog posts (one on Monday, and one today). My weekly goals for this week are:

- write 10k in WIP - completed
- write 3 blog posts (so far: 2)
- finish client edit 2 (150 pages to go)
- finish client edit 3 (this is a novella, but I have to check the number of pages, haven't started yet)
- write a short story (haven't started)
- write 2k in WIP 2 - completed

For today, my goals are:
- write 3k in WIP (already did 1k today, 2 more to go)
- edit 50 pages for client

I've gotten squat done this week. Rehearsals have been a pain and I've been too tired and brain-dead when I get home to think about writing. Haven't touched my WIP in two weeks, and it didn't help that today my agent forwarded yet another publisher's rejection of the first book in my series. It's not the first rejection (and I'm certain it won't be the last) but I wish there was some kind of consensus in these declines. This one was "I loved the characters but too much exposition" and the previous one was "I loved the world building but didn't believe the characters." Sigh.

Okay, whine over. Onward.

Grateful to have bounced back from the rejection blues last night (helps that my agent now has two more editors interested in my novel). Still haven't written anything, but I finished my third book (Pratchett's Small Gods, which I liked but wasn't as wild about as some of his other Discworld books), so that's one goal completed, at least. I've also made some headway on the weight loss.

1) Finish rough draft of Book #3 in my fantasy series
2) Revise manuscript of Book #2 in series
3) Read three books - 3 of 3 COMPLETED
4) Go for at least three good long nature walks
5) Lose the 5 pounds I put on over the holidays - 3 pounds to go
6) Write Sekrit Solstice short story
