I had to read it a couple of times. I think they're saying, "Something subtle may be happening here, and if so, we've no idea what it means yet."

Is that about right? :)

That's what I think it means also. The author didn't make any conclusion as to the cause of the bump and left open the possibility that it was caused by a glitch in the equipment, or something, but if the bump is real, then there will have to be some theory to explain it.
