Went to see the Harlem Globetrotters today. Took my daughter, who's a huge basketball fan. They were a favorite memory of mine. After the game, the put up a rope and invited everyone to come up for autographs. While they spoke to as many as they could while there, they took the most time with children with disabilities. One little girl there caught my eye.

Safye Terry. It did my heart good to see her smile.

Could You Do Any Less?

This doesn't make the cut as a "positive" news story, but it is an incredibly brave, tragic and faith-in-humanity-affirmed story.

A 10-year-old "guardian angel" in California gave her life to save two little girls when she pushed them out of the path of an SUV, authorities said.

Investigators are unsure why a 1999 Mercedes started rolling down a driveway in Lakeside on Monday before striking Kiera Larson, who was able to move the 2-year-old and 1-year-old daughter of Alissa Jenkins to safety.

“She is truly a hero. She will forever be my kids' guardian angel,” Jenkins told Fox 5. “She saved both my daughters' lives.

"These are my two kids that I have and both of them could’ve been gone in an instant and she stepped in and took over and did what she knows best to do — and that’s to protect those around her."

Kiera suffered major injuries when she was struck by the SUV, and later passed away at the hospital.

The car was set into motion "traveling backwards down the driveway," the California Highway Patrol said in a release.

Jenkins' fiance Jonathan Gusich says Kiera was always like a "big sister" to the girls.

"She was always looking out for them and apparently she gave her life for my kids,” he told the station. “I don’t know how to repay them, repay her. She must have been the guardian angel yesterday and they’re here because of her.”

A GoFundMe page for Kiera described her as "an amazing, beautiful, smart and funny little girl." Nearly $35,000 has been raised as of Thursday afternoon.

"The entire Larsen family cannot thank every single one of you for your love, support and prayers," the family wrote. "You have no idea how much seeing the support from so many people has helped us during this incredibly tough time. Again, THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts."

There's No Place Like Home

After two stays in the hospital, a double back surgery (compression fractures + stinosis in the lumbar area) and five weeks rehab in a skilled nurding facility, I'm HOME!

The therapy, both pt and ot were excellent, nursing care excellent to poor, food service very poor and administration that was sometimes defensive; at other times self-serving. Worse, after five weeks the place started playing my head.

When I get caught up on opening a mountain of mail, doing my tax return, etc., I plan to write a detailed account of my experience, particularly the snf. I want to post this on the board, a placed providing criticism is prefrerable. Suggestions?

I'm home, still a little sore, but happier.

On most political subjects I tend to lean heavily to the conservative side, but the idea of basic guaranteed income has a lot to recommend it.

The following was very welcome news to me yesterday:
http://www.theamericanconservative.com/dreher/dallas-saint-dmitri/

Yesterday our diocese reinterred our late Archbishop (he passed away 4 and a half years ago). His body was transferred to the cathedral for reburial in a shine erected in his honor. I had the honor of meeting him a handful of times, a more gracious, humble, and holy man would be hard to find. He looked like Gandalf and sounded like a cowboy. It was with great joy that upon the examination of his remains, it was discovered that they were incorrupt...after nearly 5 years in the cemetery. If you look at pictures of his first burial, and those of his remains today, there is very little difference. No sign of decay. For us, while it is not definitive, is a strong sign that we have been witness to the life of a saint. From what I know of him, that is very likely the case, though it is for an Orthodox synod to make it official. And that, for me, and my coreligionists, is very joyful news indeed.

The world is a damn mess. This photo makes it a little less of a mess.

My daughter and I are in Myrtle Beach taking a sunset walk when this adorable and sweet little boy comes walking right up to her. He shares with her the shark tooth around his neck. He tells her his name and asks her name to which she tells him. They part ways while saying goodbye, walking in the opposite direction.

A few minutes later he comes running back, in what seems to be in slow motion, yelling out my daughter's name. She turns around and is greeted by his smile. So they share a few words, mainly about his super cool shark's tooth that apparently gave him powers
:)

Before they walked, talked and raced, I asked his mother for permission to take this picture and this was the result. No one positioned them, told them to smile and there was absolutely no hesitation on their part at all. When we finished walking and it was time to go they hugged for a long time and exchanged about 20 "goodbyes"

This is a moment that we humans understand as just simply seeing no color lines, no judgement, no race, no hate, no shades. It's just pure....two kids meeting on a sunset walk without a care in the world...all they saw was each other.

This world would be a much better place if we acted like these two kids.

Why can't we hang onto that level of acceptance of our fellow humans in adulthood? Lovely picture.

Brad and Angelina are rumored to be heading for divorce. This is positive news because they deserve it for what they did to Jennifer. Yeah right, like you didn't read it, too.

Here's a story about 2 brothers that caught my eye.

A Michigan teen who has made annual treks carrying his younger brother on his back to raise awareness about cerebral palsy on Wednesday started a 111-mile walk that’s expected to be his last.
Hunter Gandee, 16, set out from Temperance in southeastern Michigan while carrying his 70-pound brother, 9-year-old Braden, who has cerebral palsy and can’t walk without assistance. The brothers expect to reach the state Capitol in Lansing on Monday, stopping at schools along the way.

This came across my Twitter the other day: black man gets pulled over by white cop, who asks why his daughter isn't in a carseat. After the father replies that he can't afford one, the cop escorts him to Walmart and buys one for him.

Saw this today.

Last fall, Rodney Smith Jr. saw an elderly man mowing grass in front of his home.
"It looked like he was struggling," said Smith, a senior at Alabama A&M University. "I was watching him and it just hit me.
"I could do something about it."
Smith posted on Facebook, asking if any of his friends knew anyone who was elderly or disabled and needed their grass cut. He didn't have his own lawnmower, but he was willing to mow yards for free in his spare time between classes.
People gave him names of friends and folks they knew. He challenged himself to cut 40 lawns by winter. He searched Craigslist for a used lawnmower so he'd be able to cut grass for people who didn't own mowers. He found one, and when he told the owner what he was doing, the man gave him the mower for free.
By October, Smith had reached his 40-lawn goal. A month later, he'd cut 100 lawns. After WHNT News 19 gave him $319 as part of a "pay it forward" segment, Smith launched the "Raising Men Lawn Care Service."

Okay, in the mildly heartwarming (cops help animal) to the 'aren't animals smart' category:http://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/offbe...ntangling-baby-from-balloon-string/ar-BBsWQqq
Like it says: Canada goose (for those who haven't met them, generally assertive-to-aggressive, and very protective of their young) has a gosling in trouble, and approaches a Cincinatti police officer for help. (I will not speculate on how often you have to stop your police car in a parking lot right by a pond before a goose recognizes your car and becomes familiar enough with the sight of you to consider you harmless.;)) The goose led the officers to the gosling, and didn't attack while one of the cops untangled a cord from the gosling's leg.
Please note, the goose didn't just come across a guy walking past: she pecked on the police car door!
