My family and close friends have all sorts of religious beliefs... some of them are fundamental Christians, some of them Catholics, Baptists, Agnostics and Atheists. I think i do have some friends that might share Zalmoxian neo-pagan beliefs, but i am not sure of it :)

Anyway, when speaking with family about such issues, care should be considered especially if fundamentalism is involved.

I generally avoid speaking about religion as much as I can. There is a saying: „speak with your friends about soccer, about food, about woman, but avoid religion and politics”. I generally stick to it. Although basically an Eastern Orthodox, years of reading trough theological literature and certain personal experiences had driven me to certain religious opinions that could be considered rather bizarre by most people. I prefer to keep them for myself.

As one of my late friends thought me, once we go into the world, we start reading, we start learning, discovering new things, than we begin to realise that not all what we had been taught is true. Then, we go our own paths of discovery and we find our own ways to understand the Life and Universe.

Could you help me come up with a good, respectful response to the question of why I don't go to his church? Or for other people who ask, why I'm not a Christian? Thank you.

"I've tried it, and it's just not my thing."

For tone of voice, imagine someone is being kind and trying to offer you anchovy pizza because that's what they like eating, but that topping just isn't to your taste.

You really shouldn't need to explain that to anyone. Just say "I'm a Unitarian", and don't bother trying to please anyone for whom that isn't a satisfactory response. At that point, it would be them who are being rude.

The example may have been resolved more than five years ago, but the topic is current.

I believe in persons having their own agency in the big world. A smaller piece of the world will have its own special customs.

When you have an escort, count on your escort. "My friend is just visiting today. We're spending the day together."

If you're looking for active discussion, maybe start some. Otherwise it starts to look a lot like rummaging through old, dead stuff to find ways to get to 50 posts.

I have started threads. I also mean to contribute in small ways to the growth of the Forum.

I read through the fifty+ posts of this thread before I commented. I noticed that no one had offered the alternative that I had in mind.

With nearly 7500 posts to your credit, what has been your ratio of the two alternatives?

My posting record speaks for itself. As does yours.

I'm not the only person who's tried explaining the local customs to you. If you choose not to learn the culture of the home into which you've wandered...well, good luck with that.

Yet you completely, repeatedly, fail the basic request of respecting your fellow writer.

This time, by the way, I'm publicly chastising you.

Your response is entitled, and typical of your posting history at AW.

We're never going to be a good fit. There are many other writing forums out there.

ETA: MacAllister has returned the $20.00 subscription.

I'm sure one of them will work much better for you.

If you've subscribed, as you noted in another of your posts, Mac will refund the subscription. I've PM'd you instructions about contacting her and providing the data she needs; she can't find any subscription from the email address and name you used to register.

And with that, we're done.
