I sent an .rtf file to someone and when she tries to download it it says "download as zip or save to online drive". I've not run across this before. She also says the file says "zip". Does anyone have any suggestions of what might be happening?

I sent the same file to another person who has had no issue.

Try zipping it and re-sending it.

You also don't say how you are sending it, and how she is receiving it.

via email attachment (from gmail to hotmail)

I try to zip it and send it. Thanks for the idea!

If it wasn't a zip when you sent it, I don't see how it could have become one in transit. Maybe try "download as a zip" and then rename the file if it somehow gets named "something.zip" .

Some ISPs and mail providers will automatically compress files. It's not uncommon.

Ah, that's good to know. I'll let her know. I also asked for a screen shot. I'm not too sure she know exactly what is happening since she has said a few different things. Unfortunately she doesn't check her email often, so I'm just waiting. I'll let everyone know what happens.

Thanks everyone for the tips.

Usually I see dl-as-zip when there are multiple files; you can get them all in one package. In this case...well, I have a little-used account that comes in handy at times like this.

Here's what I see:
hotmail-att.png

If she clicked on the right thing, the RTF file would undoubtedly appear as an RTF file and download as such. Clicking the beginning of the lower line ("Show content") will show more , including a lovely big icon for the file.

I never thought of that. I'll suggest that, too. Unfortunately, she won't send me a screenshot or answers questions. :(
