I'm looking for a new steampunk book but lacking inspiration - any recommendations for a book that you found particularly amazing? (I'm not very keen on romance storylines by the way, and I'm just as happy with self pub as with trad pub -- the focus's the story and the writing).

Thanks!!

I'm a fan of Cherie Priest's 'Clockwork Century' series - steampunk novels set in an alternative version of past America, complete with airships and sky pirates. There's even a nice zombie-related subplot running beneath the series. Start with 'Boneshaker' and go from there.

I really loved Gail Carriger's Soulless series. It has a romance in it, but it's more of a mystery/adventure and super funny. She also has a young adult series in the same world that predates the adult series. It's very charming and imaginative but not as great as Soulless.

Edit: The first book is called Soulless. I believe the actual series is called The Parasol Protectorate.
