I will be self-pubbing the first of three offbeat historical novels come January 2015, followed shortly by the other two. From what I read the genre is not a big seller and that's fine. I've had seven excerpts from these novels published in literary magazines (in four countries) but not a lick of interest from agents.
I'm planning on using Smashwords and Amazon and CreateSpace. Reading about them gives me headaches and I fear formatting. That's fine, too.
I'm working on a fourth book (they all share characters and themes), which finally brings me to my question: Would it be any benefit to publish the first chapter of the WIP as a short story (for free), along with a preview chapter of the first book, prior to the publication of novel #1?
Thanks for any help and thank you all who have related your experiences here. Your stories have been very helpful and have eased my confusion somewhat.
