Thumbs up Call for submissions: microstories! Flash fiction, non-fiction, poetry, spoken word. (PAID)

What Bide likes most about words is the moments spent with them. Brevity. A snatched story or a glimpsed character or just a minute on the back of a truck with the dry air coming down from the desert.

Do you know what I mean?

So, Bide is for flash. Not just fiction, and actually, not just writing. But momentary storytelling. Stuff that fits on a page, or inside a minute. Glances.

Bide will be published twice a year as a printed, stapled A5 zine, with a hand-written thanks from your friendly local editor, Anna Spargo-Ryan. It will also be available online as a PDF download, and as a .mobi and .epub, for your digital bookery.

We are accepting fiction, non-fiction, poetry, spoken word, video, art and sideways glances.

    Topics we especially love are:

    people!!
    feelings!!
    places!!
    food!
    science!
    politics!
    art!
    literature!
    animals

We are here to promote momentary storytelling. There are no strict word limits, but think about between 10 and 400 words, or 25 lines of poetry, or 30-60 seconds of your voice/face.

All successful submissions will be paid AU$80.

We might also ask if you’d be okay with us publishing your piece on our website instead. Website-only publication will be paid AU$40.

    Submissions through Submittable: http://bide.submittable.com/submit

    Hi Anna,

Will you consider reprints or original stories only? (The guidelines don't seem to say.)

Is it permissible to submit multiple pieces?

    Thanks.

Yes to multiples - up to three at a time is a-ok

I'd prefer original content. I wouldn't be able to pay as much for a piece that's already been submitted elsewhere, but do send it through if you think it has earned itself another run!

What's your usual turn around time for reviewing submissions?

This looks like a great place to submit! I'm very excited!

I've never submitted anything like this before, but I'd so love to. I think I have a poem that might be a good fit. What is appropriate to include in the cover letter field on Submittable? A short intro about oneself or about the piece... ?

Thanks. I'm new to plucking up the courage to submit!

I love this concept of momentary storytelling. I'll be looking through my stories and poems to see what fits.

Attempt #3 just sent in! Persistent, I am, though some might call it not learning from my mistakes.

I have another question. You stated that Bide is printed twice a year. When will you begin accepting submissions for your next issue? And will you post on AW again when your next submission call begins?

So does anyone else have any submissions pending? My latest story has been in the pit for twelve days, and I'm hoping it means what my writing professor told me: the longer it takes for you to hear back from them, the more rounds of the gauntlet your story has survived.

Second rejection today. I think the second submission was 11/26. No time to check submittable now.

    Hello ,

My third rejection came through yesterday:
    submitted Nov 25th - rejected 8th Dec

I am not going to submit anything else, unless one of us actually gets through.

I've had five rejection letters so far. But I've just sent in my sixth piece. At the very least, this whole thing has helped me add a bunch of stories to my slush pile.

I submitted three stories on 11/26 and all were declined yesterday. I'll try again, though.

I submitted a short story yesterday (December 9th). I'll report once I hear back from them.

And story #7 is sent in. With all the posts about people sending things in and getting rejected, I'm starting to think this publication is an AW white whale.

Update: Story #7 got rejected after only a few hours, but story #6 is still in the running. I hope that means something good!
