since everyone says go it alone

The pro-self-publishing people are very loud and adamant online -- it's practically a religious movement. If you start researching "getting published" online from a perspective of not yet knowing anything about it, it's hard NOT to come away with the impression that self-publishing is the only way to go. It's certainly one option, if you go in with eyes open, but it's not the panacea that the evangelists make it out to be.

Vanity presses and sellers of dubious services to authors also spend a lot of time trolling any (online or meatspace) venue where new writers seek advice. Or they disguise their sales pitches as helpful advice for authors. Trying to research how to get published can be a minefield.

Fortunately, you've come the the right place :). There are some amazingly knowledgeable and helpful people on this site; I'm very grateful for the effort they put in.

The way they responded to anything less than boot licking praise was disgusting. Also, that website looked like it was made in 1996.

To be fair, that's their old website. Not that their current one is any better.

Which probably means they'll spend tuppence ha'penny on slapping it together and not give the poor author a penny until they've "recouped" the $6000 they "spent" on it. This is seriously not an improvement.
