Do any of you use a publicist or have recommendations?

On a side note: I spoke with a publicist this morning... when I mentioned that I will be pouring any advance back into marketing, she mentioned that even with an Agent - chances a publisher will ever give an author an "advance" are "very slim".

I was a little surprised to hear that.

She was wrong.

Agents rarely make deals which don't earn advances: if they did, they wouldn't earn a living.

If she was wrong about that then she is probably wrong about other stuff too. Which could well mean she won't be able to publicise your book effectively.

I don't think I've ever heard good things about authors hiring publicists. I'm sure it's out there though, but there are already so many ways to have a presence online it's not really a necessity anymore.

I know of several authors who have hired publicists to great effect. There's a lot that can't be done online, and good publicists can get coverage that writers can't achieve on their own. I wouldn't discount it.
