Here, there, everywhere.
Extra hours is good, no? More pay?

I'm feeling more and more anxious these days, period. The kidlets don't return from Portugal until the 24th and I just want them home. *sigh*

Yeah, it's more money. I'll take it. Money is good and it pays bills.

I can only imagine what you're going through while the kids are gone. But I'm sure they'll be just fine.

The anxiety has been a new thing for me. Up until just a year ago or so, I never really had any anxiety, but it's just been a developing thing.

Really sad to hear Darkfuse declared bankruptcy today. I have a good piece that I'd submitted six-months ago to the day that I was anxiously looking forward to a reply on.

Ah well. Such is the writer's life.

Hi, Hounds! I've missed you guys. I hope someone has been feeding Selene and Elizabeth while I was away. It's good to be back.

There's been some interesting things happening in Lilithville. I've been blogging. I finally found my niche: writing speculative fiction, including Horror. I also recently decided to move my blog from free hosting to paid hosting so I can provide life coach style help to writers struggling to get things done or with finding the process that works for them. I created a gofundme to cover the cost because I'm broke and both the epilepsy and depression have been kicking my ass. I won't bombard you with the link, but it is in my signature if anyone is interested.

How has everyone else been?

I'll try to be more proactive in sharing sub calls I see.

In the UK, Alchemy Press have a new open call. They're good folks - I've had stories in three of their previous anthos over the years.

2018 sees the re-launch of the Alchemy Press Book Of… anthologies with a brand new title: HORRORS, edited by Peter Coleborn and Jan Edwards. We are looking for horror stories … but tales that can be described as “weird”, “strange”, “amazing” and “peculiar”: stories that would have found a home in Weird Tales, Unknown Worlds, Fantastic and Fantasy Tales among other illustrious publications.

Your story can be set in almost any era, any place but glimpse at and pervert the usual perceptions of reality – and unreality. We do not want stories that deal with common horror tropes without stretching boundaries. Avoid zombies unless they are tackled in an unexpected and strange fashion. No urban romance – you know, heroine falling for a vampire and so forth. Nor do we want to see religious tracts, porn, and we really, really do not want gross-out horror tales.

Please send your stories in a standard manuscript format (3,000-6,000 words [flexible – contact us before submitting]) to [email protected] to arrive by 31 January 2018 (contact us if an extension is required).

Payment: 0.5p a word (£20 for 4,000 words, £30 for 6,000 words), plus a copy of the book and royalties. The anthology will be in print for a maximum of five years and then the book will become OOP.

Contact form at the link.

If I had more time to write horror shorts...

I sold 3 this summer :)hooray:) and my other 2 are still out. I love writing horror. It's a good release from writing light, funny mystery novels. If only I didn't have to feed the family and pay the light bill...

I'm not sure who all is checking in on these updates, but I'll keep posting them as if somebody is.

I really love this call for subs. I have a paranormal detective I'd love to develop more.

I pay attention to these, Ted, so thanks! And Willie, yours looks good, too.

Speaking of finding these Antho calls, I started a thread the other day about common site resources you use because apparently I sucketh at finding them. If you have any advice you are willing to share, that would be cool. Linky to the thread.

Severed Press are open for action adventure horror and scifi novellas and novels. Several of my writing buddies have work with them and all say good things ( and I have a contract for a novel there now too ). Booms, bangs and big creature mayhem. What's not to like?

What we want

Killer sea creatures or monstrous kaiju fiction: Creature features about monsters that come from the deep, or maybe even somewhere more terrifying. Minimum word count 30k.

Dinosaurs : Lost world adventures featuring terrifying creatures from the past. Minimum word count 30k

Military horror/sci-fi: Like Predator or Aliens, a military unit faces off against an unknown threat from beyond the stars or from another dimension. Minimum word count 40k

Apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic scenarios (including TEOTWAWKI or SHTF): Stories that explore the end of the world or life after it: zombie outbreaks, alien invasions or whatever else may serve as a harbinger of the end times! Minimum word count 60k

LitRPG: Stories where characters are transported or trapped within an online game, usually a MMORPG . LitRPG blends traditional science fiction and fantasy with gaming elements and mechanics. Minimum word count 30k.

LitFPS: Stories that blend fiction with First Person Shooters. Minimum word count 30k.

That’s what we want, but the presentation is up to you. Fiction can be serious, downbeat, comedic and satirical, or maybe just scary as hell. Be creative and mix it up! A good story that’s well told is what matters most to us.

What we don’t want?

Erotica and pornography: we don’t shy away from adult content, but it has to work within the context of the story.

Unsolicited submissions from published and new authors alike will be considered for publication provided that the manuscript conforms to the relevant genre(s) listed above and aligns with our general standards for publication.

All fiction submissions should offer a strong plot with stimulating and logically ordered content, and feature fully developed and realized characters. Above all else, it must be well written.

The procedure for submission is as follows

Prepare a synopsis of approximately 200 words in length that covers your main plot points, key themes and major character.
Include the synopsis in a cover letter introducing yourself.
Attach your manuscript to your email in .docx, .doc or .rtf formats.
Email it to [email protected]
Please DO NOT mail your manuscript to us. We accept no responsibility for the return of your manuscript.
Please indicate in the cover letter if this is a simultaneous submission, or exclusive to Severed Press. An example of a simultaneous submission would be a manuscript that you submitted to us, and other publishers or agents as well. We do not have a policy against simultaneous submissions, but as a courtesy, we do request that you notify us as soon as possible if your work has been accepted for publication or representation elsewhere.
