The Book Doctor Is In (Stacey Aaronson)

    Hi Folks,

Just checking to see if anyone has any experience with The Book Doctor Is In. A full-service advisor, editor, designer for those seeking to publish.

    Thanks as always,

    Chris

Thanks for PMing me a link, Runner, but it would have been better if you'd posted it in-thread.

    Here it is.

She has no experience in publishing: she seems to think that having checked her friends' work for typos qualifies her to edit a book. She not only edits, she does cover design too, and she designs books, and she even offers handholding and cheerleading.

    I'm not convinced.

My main advice from looking at her site is to shop around. It's worded in a way to make you not want to leave, because she'll understand you, wave the pom-poms, and so on and so forth. But you need to cut through that and look it in a un-emotional way. Does she provide the quality of service you're looking for at a good price? Will you end up paying more with per hour charges (over per number of words or a set fee for a cover)? Does she usually work with your genre (her work is pretty focused to one style)? This would be for each service separately, as someone might be reasonable at one thing, but not that great at another.

The hourly rate would bother me. It's not usual for freelance work like that, and means you wouldn't be certain how much it'd cost.

You're fine posting links, so long as you're not trying to procure business by doing so.

Lots of people decide to be editors but very few of them are appropriately qualified to do the job. You're far better off finding editors who have plenty of experience in working in trade publishing.

There's a good thread here, which mentions a few excellent editors.
