Oh no not the Kiwis! Heavens forbid
Welcome to AW, Meg. We needed more Aussies. The Kiwis were starting to get the upper hand...
Welcome. We have plenty of Aussies on here. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding some of them.
Hey Rusty,
Well I actually just finished reading the Divergent series, and after bawling my eyes out for the rest of the day, I realised that every series I loved had something I hate about it! For example;
- The Divergent series by Veronica Roth, had an unnecessary to plot line EXTREMELY sad death. (I've later read the author's justification and sure it makes sense... that doesn't stop me from hating it!) Also the structure in the third book adjusts to accommodate for this and it's clunky.
- Isobelle Carmody, WHEN is she going to FINISH a series that I have grown to love, rather than write all until the last book then state that it will be released in the indeterminate future!
- Orson Scott Card. He's great with the make believe science stuff, but he needs to learn how to write proper romance. (Or at least, I want to read it!)
- Robin Hobb, I love her characters and her stories. But I would love for her to try and come up with smart and legitimate endings that don't feel like she pieced them together at the last minute.
- Suzanne Collins (Hunger Games) Third book. Need I say more. She really should have planned that out better.
... you get the drift! Anyway after crying all day over the ending of that book, I went through a list of all the books I love that have something wrong with them. Then I realised, I wanted to write the books that I wanted to read, including satisfactory (pre-planned) endings, a decent but not overwhelming serve of romance, etc etc.
So the next morning I started jotting down ideas on paper, making brain maps etc, not really expecting it to go anywhere. After a few hours I had the skeleton of three books, and by 11pm I'd filled out my plans and written 6,000 words of my first book. Then I just rolled with the momentum. But yes, the short and uncomplicated answer to your question, it was all planned out and outlined, (although flexibly).
Let me know when/if you post some of your work, I'd definitely be interested in reading about your Dog Zodiac boy
Ooh, I didn't see this comment until now! Thanks for sharing your writing process and thoughts on those authors!
I have mad love for Robin Hobb, but you're right, now that I think about her endings, I kind of can't remember any of them... I haven't read the other authors (I thought Warrior's Apprentice, which I'm reading and loving, is by Orson Scott Card, but nope, Lois McMaster Bujold), I am so embarrassed, will get to it! ;-)
It's fantastic that your first draft was born out of the determination to write a better book than these authors, and how fast you put plan to action. A three book plan as well, wah... Have you written much before?
Haha, thanks for showing interest in my Dog Zodiac story! I've actually revised my post after receiving your comments, although unsure whether I'm telling (instead of showing) too much now. Would really appreciate a second look from you if you have the time
You changed your avatar to a cat. Nice
Hoi hoi!
Haha, I love recs, but I am rarely short of books to read! It's because I tend to latch on to an author and obsess over them (this usually means reading all of their work) before moving on to the next one. With prolific authors like Robin Hobb and Diana Wynne Jones, it means I get 'stuck' with them for a long time But I really need to start reading more recently-published YA books, so I think I will give goodreads a try.
Did you know that Robin Hobb is continuing the Fitz and the Fool series? Fool's Assassin is coming out later this year, with two more books to follow, which of course means rereading allll the books that came prior. I also have my fingers crossed for a happy ending, but we both know that Hobb's a tease...
Ah, I see. Hmm, I still don't see anything that particularly explains how you can write 50k in 10 days... you're still a mystery to me ^_^; But it's awesome, looking forward to you sharing more of your work~
