I'm afraid I'll be missing it. I'm in Alaska, near Denali today.

My usual city will have something like 70% total, which is cool.

Know where I'd like to be seeing it? There's a cruise positioning its ship(s?) directly in the path, off the east coast.

How close to total eclipse is your city? Must be pretty close, based on my weak knowledge of geography.

Anybody else care to share how much they'll see?

Maryn, with a poor connection

Are you going to see the eclipse and if so where?
The eclipse hits us Monday, between 1pm and 4pm. The kids will be let out of school after lunch so they can be safely indoors before it occurs and the school won't be held responsible for damaged eyes.

I don't know that we'll go anywhere to see it--I assumed I could just look up in the sky (with the aid of glasses) and watch. But there's always the NASA live-feed if your area doesn't have a good view. Safer that way, too.

We will be making a day trip so we can be in totality.
We are enduring killer heat. Alaska sounds like a nice place to be now.

Don't be too quick on that. Even though I packed fleece and rain gear, I had to
buy a warmer jacket here. In August!

I work with a woman who seriously wears long sleeves and 2 shirts along with her jacket, all in July and August while sitting out in the sun. Soooo disgusting.

We had something called a zombie walk here. It was graced by a protestor. I listened to a bit of his message but gave up when I could not determine if he found Catholics or zombies more distasteful. He seemed to be preaching against both with equal fervor.

No Maryn, she has no problems with blood pressure. I just don't get it, but whatever. Komnena, Some people love to have an audience so that they can spread craziness. I don't get them either...

In my city, there's a Bible-thumping guy outside at every baseball game, preaching about sin and salvation at the top of his lungs. Sometimes there's two, and if you observe them, you can tell they're competing and don't like each other to be there. I guess they have their spots, like homeless people and hookers.

Speaking of which, Alaska has a pretty bad homeless situation if appearances are to be believed. I can't think of a worse place to be without shelter, but the cops leave them be, at least. It's annoying to be a tourist approached with stupidly implausible stories that end with a request for money.

WOW! I was noticing a few months ago that even with help wanted signs up EVERYWHERE around here there will be people standing out with signs. It is becoming too hard to find the people who truly are needy for all of the people just trying to keep from working. One man was in traffic at the turn in for a shopping area here, literally under a sign saying now hiring and 2 others that were in his line of sight...

It is Worldfest weekend. I have acquired a shirt, some Japanese coasters and a Japanese bowl. I have learned that I am entitled to the Scottish Galloway tartan.

Sounds like fun! I don't really have any feel for how diverse your area is, but that they host a Worldfest says a lot.

Me, I'm deeply into stay-home mode. Travel for 17 days was too much, really, even though I enjoyed myself. Once I get a new hosting site lined up, I'll share a pic or two.

Maryn, ready to go walking so of course the rain's started up again

We have quite a bit of diversity here. This is international month. Each library is doing a different country. My branch is doing Japan.
That's a long time to be away from home!

Do you get to wear a kimono to work?

Maryn, silly for lack of sleep

I could wear a kimono if I wanted to as long as it had no political or commercial message. However I think my Celtic face would look way out of place in a kimono.

That's why there's kibuki makeup, silly!

Although I admit I can't quite envision you in it.

Kibuki makeup is one of those picture-is-worth-a-thousand-words things. You've seen it, even if you don't know its name. Click on this, this, and/or this.

We have a wasp infestation in back, and they've bored a hole in the siding. This means they're getting inside, although we're not sure where. We took down the wind chime and used its hook for an adhesive-type wasp trap and got well over a hundred wasps the first day. We hope to reduce the swarming population enough that Mr. Maryn can spray inside the hole with this deterrent stuff they hate, and in another day or two, patch the hole.

Man, with carpenter bees in front and wasps in back, maybe it's time to move!

That makes sense. I hate nuclear weapons, and I've never been nuked. ;)

Russ! Long time no see, dude.

I want to get an exterminator involved. We've had five or six wasps inside in the last two days. They're inside the wall, thanks to the nice hole they've made, and have apparently found at least one gap in the internal wall. So far, they've been in two rooms, none of them the bedroom, but man, the idea of wasps while I'm sleeping freaks me out.

Hell, that's not even first on the list of things so dire they freak me out.
