Indeed. What I like to do when I have lots of feedback is let it settle for a while, then summarize it for my use in future work (Watch verb tenses for consistency or be sure to describe setting at least a little) before addressing specifics for a particular story.

I'm also able to be more objective if I save it with the critics' names stripped off. This is so I can't devalue any input because it's from this or that person, whether it's because I don't like them or because I don't think they write well. Doesn't mean they're not absolutely right. It forces me to consider every suggestion based on its merit.

Maryn, who drank at a fancy lunch out, so hopes this makes sense

Good luck, Sass!

I am transitioning between jobs now. After 10 painful years and 7 soul crushing months at a company that has pretty much blighted my resume, I am now an Uber driver. Got my phone last night...but I have to buy a new car this week. The Chevy is old and held together with glue (the driver seat is held up with a damn board!) and repairs would cost more than the blue book value.
I'm waiting for the Uber salesperson to call back - yes, this is how rich Go0gle is :D They co-finance your car and give you a free iPhone for showing up. But he has to make a great offer or I'm going for a gently used sedan.
Buying a new car is a lot of work! I inherited my prior ride from the family so I'm new at this. Don't get me started on buying insurance, getting my credit report, and all that. But it will be so worth it next week.

I demand--well, I ask politely!--a picture of the new car when you get it. A new ride is exciting. Even my stupid minivans are exciting when they're new.

Maryn, whose husband is way overdue for a new car

Thanks, guys. I haven't posted pics here in, uh, ever.
A new ride is exciting, a new career is...just, wow.

Plus the new book (below, hint hint), and life is going to be great soon.

So it's true, then: these things come in threes.

Enjoy 'em all, Mario.

Mr. Maryn is goosing me toward a new computer as an early birthday present, since it looks like this 2007 one won't be able to run Windows 7 very well. More than half the hard drive is vacant (kind of like my brain), but it's not a matter of space or even processing speed.

I'd been reluctant to agree until this morning, when the damned thing froze on me when I had a massive three programs running--Word, Evernote, and Firefox. It should be able to handle that, but no-o-o!

Maryn, frustrated

Oh, almost forgot. Taking a three-day weekend starting tomorrow, so if you notice my absence, be not afraid. We're meeting family in a neutral city where the restaurants and hotels can worry about keeping the difficult ones happy.

Maryn, not sure what to pack

Have a great 3 day weekend, Maryn.

Yes, that's Windows - on the warpath against comfy old PCs. Tiny and disposable smartphones are the future, people.
At my last day at the old job today, at first I thought Outlook was not working because I was the last person on the floor to still have XP on my workstation (which pretty much sums up my relationship with that company). Silly me, they were afraid I would launch a company-wide spam strike or something so they locked me out of my work. Gee, why would I go off all disgruntled like that?!

I can't imagine why, Mario.
I have spent the weekend with my family. It looks like my sister has acquired a dog. She appears to be a German Shepherd, Rottweiler mix with enough coonhound thrown in for her to have the long bay of that breed. We're hoping the owners turn up, however. Someone apparently spent a lot of time leash-training her.

Mario that sucks. On my last job I was working away on my last day trying to leave things so they could pick up where I left off and at 3 my boss said I could leave early. I told her what I was trying to do and she said not to worry about it. She left when I did. I realized later she basically escorting me out. Like I wasn't to be trusted. After I gave her everything for 4 years. I was pissed.

Komnena I hope it works out for the best with the dog.

I had a nice Easter. I had fun coloring eggs and had a nice lunch with friends. I took a nap and did a little writing too.

I always envied the people who didn't do right by the company. Instead of trying to leave things ready for their replacements in their final two weeks after giving notice, some employees simply go to lunch and never come back. Only safe if you will never, ever need a recommendation or even an employment confirmation, of course.

Maryn, who doesn't have the balls to do that sort of thing

Me either, I've always tried to leave on good terms. But the last two weeks can still be a freeing experience. Something goes wrong? Boss piss me off? Who cares, what are they going to do? fire me?

There was that one job though, back when I was all of 20, that I don't include on my resume. I covered for my supervisor who was late, and in front of his wife who didn't like said supervisor, my boss fired me when he found out. When she left, he begged me to stay. I realized he didn't care about me, but he didn't' want the hassle of finding a new person. I declined to stay. It was a shady place and in the long run I needed to leave anyway. They did me a favor. blah.

My Twitter was hacked last night. Is there no end to this crap? While I was away, my debit card was used for a $600 purchase in Valley Stream, New York. (Luckily, I'm not liable.) But sheesh, this is getting ridiculous, that there seems to be no security anywhere but AW.

Maybe I should just never leave.

Maryn, who'd consider that

Yeah, my frustrations with things online is large, but I don't have to look very hard to find someone who's got real problems.

While we were traveling, I read the paper with more attention than I ever do at home. Man, the world is a terrible place. 250 girls kidnaped in Nigeria for going to school, and nobody's looking very hard. The ugly ones will most likely be maids and cooks, and the pretty ones sex slaves. How is this not on the front page? And how the fuck do I know more about the Kardashians than the group which did this, and claims nearly 4000 deaths in Nigeria this year?

Maryn, not a fan of online news feeds

I know- where is the outrage for things that are happening elsewhere, like anti-gay laws in Uganda? stuff like that. People get all up in arms about what the guy on duck dynasty said and are oblivious to things that matter.
