Another Author / Artist

I'm another author and artist, but a digital artist. About 14 years ago, I stumbled into digital art quite by accident. A publisher took me under her wing and taught me the basics. Thereafter, I purchased Photoshop and learned everything hands on. To see some of my work, my website is http://www.dusktildawndesigns.com

I've done all my own book covers as well. I will confess that I would be a cover artist's worst nightmare. I'm never satisfied. Even after my books are published, I'll look at a cover and find something I want to change. I was once asked how many covers I've created, so I sat down and did a quick calculation. Over 1k. *stunned* I find that being an author (and a retired managing editor) gives me a better edge at designing book covers for other writers.

that's pretty cool ^^ I'm more of a traditional artist, working mostly in lineart. I also use charcoal and pastels, with a rare foray into painting or digital art.

I've often wondered myself.
I'm a semi-professional artist which means that I sell but can't support myself with my art. I do most forms of visual art; photography, digital art, drawing, painting and some odd combinations of all of them. For me the subject matter tends to decide which medium I work in.

I recently finished my first novel and am working on revisions. Oddly enough I've got some ideas for it but I don't want to do my own cover art when the book is finally finished.

Artist/author here. Design my own art for my books. Many other projects I make my own graphics for, like Cd covers, booklets, posters, marketing material, webpage, etc.

Me! Graphic design and prepress work is, or was, my day job -- which is handy for self-publishing and cover design purposes! (Although it's surprisingly difficult to design my own covers -- way harder than other people's for some reason.) I also do traditional art, mostly ink and watercolor. And I write, of course.

I've been doing comics off and on for awhile (webcomic link in my profile! *shameless*) which is a nice way to combine my two main interests.

Wow! You all have some beautiful artworks!

I'm also an artist/author, however I mostly draw two of my characters and only for my own entertainment. I've never thought of doing this professionally, I think I just lack the skills to do it. But I have my bedroom filled with my own drawings (including some with motivational messages to keep me writing =))

You can see my art here : http://altiv.deviantart.com/gallery/8427920/Second-Coming

Hey, Miss Strawberrii, I left you a comment on your dA page ;) Nice art by the way!

Here's my favorite artwork:

I noticed most of the posts in here are people looking for covers, or people who design them, but I'm curious - are there any other author-artists here?

I illustrate all my work, design my own covers, etc... for m, the illustrations are a necessary part of the work, and included in the total narrative.

Here's some of my covers and artwork for LILIUM, the series I am self-publishing and serializing on my website (which I also built!):

And here's the MC from my urban fantasy novel:

Yes, I've just self published two books and did the artwork for both.

Author/artist here, too! Artist long before I was an author. I designed my book covers for my travel books (in my sig). I also do lots of digital painting as well as photography. Some examples: http://www.greendragonartist.com/Galleries/Small Images/Digital/Marsh Fae.jpg

Sorry for the bigger images at first. They are small on my website (72ppi, and none more than 200k) - not sure why they show up so big when I link them.

These are small images on my website - don't know why they're showing up so huge here. I'll have to relink them, as I don't have Dreamweaver at work to change my website.

Greendragon, they appear small on your web page because of width and size tags in the HTML code, but the images themselves are actually quite large (over 1000 pixels wide).

Nice work, BTW!

I'm an artist first, but I want to tell stories since for me, art has been more about designing pretty things rather than creating anything with meaning. I'm trying to work on writing, but it's hard because it feels like trying to draw with a blindfold on. I've got lots of fragments of ideas, but little finished work.

I'm hoping to bring some attention to my art shops if I can animate some funny cartoon shorts and practice writing on a smaller scale. I really want to write a novel... well, one with a plot. I already wrote that first terrible one for the trash heap.

It's good to see other people are doing both. I was afraid of looking like I was trying to show off by attempting to get good at two things.

I started as an artist. Tried art in college, found out at the end of the first year they were no longer allowing oils and water-based oils weren't really a thing yet. Freelanced for a bit then stopped in 2003. Started writing in 2006. Still working toward publication.

Recently started drawing again. I had forgotten how much I loved it.
Learning how to turn my pencil sketches into digital ones. I'm happy with it so far though it still needs some polishing.

I've been writing, but also painting, working as a graphic artist, and doing a lot of photography. This is a mock cover I did while dreaming about my next book getting picked up by an agent. I hopefully made it the right size...

*bump*

I'm one too! I was actually an artist before I was a writer (and before I even learned to write), and nowadays I like to combine the two, both for myself and for others. Here, have a tiny, quickly put together portfolio of some of the things I found on my iPad. I take my art in ink or graphite, b/w and with lots of details. Occasionally I dabble in watercolour, acrylic and charcoal as well. The two figures in the link were made for school (I graduated high school as textile designer), they were both a part of their respective collections. When drawing humans for fun, I tend to add more dynamics to it.

The text in the pic with illustration around it is the first chapter of a story I was writing a while ago, in what's pretty much my usual handwriting.

Wow. You are all amazing! I've recently started sculpting, which is really no good for book covers, heh, though I did do a CD case once. Tis still art. :)

Hi guys. Joining the author/artist thread. I have started a book cover design "business" this year (using quotes because I wok as an individual. Not sure if I will make a company since I earn very little from it). Aside from that though, I also draw and paint in watercolors and oils and enjoy photomanipulation. I kinda suck at digital painting, but I'm trying LOL

Here's my Da account if any of you wanna befriend me http://shayla-mist.deviantart.com/

I love art. Well, I should say I love drawing. My coloring skills are lacking. I feel like I could be a lot better if I had the patience to really color, REALLY color, beyond my amateur ways. I mean using values enough that I don't need line art, and knowing where to shade soft and where to shade harsh, etc.

I'd love to draw my own cover and/or an illustration for my novel here and there.

Here is my deviantART if anyone wants to see! http://wfgodot.deviantart.com/

It's fairly empty. I don't draw a lot, even though I love it. I end up getting distracted by other things far too often. Also, my subject matter is kind of immature, I suppose. But I like what I like.

Hi, James. Great art!

I'm sure the mods will stop by to mention it, but the art needs to be resized so each piece fits into 400 pixels or smaller at the largest dimension. There are lots of people on AW who have slower connections that get bogged down with huge images. It's a courtesy thing.

I'm another artist/writer, but I dabble in a lot of other creative stuff, too.

Awesome stuff! I found I get faster at drawing, but not better.

Great seeing another serial writer! I find it's a blast. Lot of work though.

I'm a writer, web designer, artist, and graphic designer.

My husband makes signs and has over fifty years of experience. I learned graphic design from him.

I taught myself web design.

I took classes in drawing and later learned to use watercolor pencils on my own.

I'm using one of my original pieces of artwork for my book cover design.
