It's a tragic death, of course. But I'd guess that most Americans would say that it's no worse than the type of criminal gang violence that goes on in some inner cities here in the U.S. The only difference is that it happened a thousand or several thousand miles away.

My guess is that most Americans wouldn't even take note of any kind of violence in Central America unless a U.S. citizen is murdered, such as the high-profile executions that happened in Nicaragua or El Salvador in the 1979-1981 period: ABC reporter Bill Stewart; Catholic missionaries Dorothy Kazel, Maura Clarke, Jean Donovan, and Ita Ford; and AFL-CIO representatives Mark Pearlman and Michael Hammer.
