Hey,

First time on this part of AW... I'm just wondering if there's any good horror/dark supernatural mysteries out there - I already know of the Dresden Files, Hellblazer and things like Cthulhu noir, I'm looking for things like that or darker. I'm planning my own novel along those lines (details of which can be found here), and would like to read more up on the sub genre before I really set into it.

Thanks!

Dave

Sure, lots of 'em. In fact, almost any horror story or novel can be thought of as a mystery with the horror sewn around it. The mystery is in the "what the hell is going on" aspect, the "what is it" aspect, the "how do we survive it" aspect, and the "how do we kill it" aspect.

Some suggestions,

Dark Fall by Dean Koontz
Phantoms by Dean Koontz
Watchers by Dean Koontz
It by Stephen King
From A Buick 8 by Stephen King
Salem's Lot by Stephen King
The Thing novelization by Alan Dean Foster
Who Goes There by Don A Stuart (aka John W Campbell, Jr)

and that's just a start. There thousands of other titles if you look around a bit and read them with the right mindset.

Some of the essences of good horror is the mystery, the sense of anticipation, the building suspense.
