This is a probably a stupid question but....

Pretty sure this wouldn't be meant for the basic writing questions threads.

I was just curious why some people cross out something they've said?

Like I'm typing and making a comment just like this but have so decided to strike it in the message box but not delete it. I don't understand

Can someone please enlighten me? I'm really just curious. Thanks

It's an Internet thing - it means like...

Last night, oh, I went to the Justin Beiber concert. I had a good time at the poetry reading.

You want to say something but want to show you 'shouldn't,' for whatever reason.

*I did not go to a Justin Beiber concert.

Also, they might have written something that, as the thread developed, they changed their mind about. In that case, striking out the words instead of deleting them preserves the flow of the conversation while also acknowledging the change of opinion.

Or on the flipside, where you originally say what you really want to say but then remember you're in polite company. So you're 'calling it like it is' but then toning it down a bit.
