I can't find a statement as to whether or not the wild bird food with sunflower seeds is included in the recall, or should be. I'm not just concerned for birds (perhaps this doesn't make them ill), but also squirrels since they eat the seds too. I'm hoping someone with better google skills knows the answer. I'd hate to be making them sick particularly during the warm weather when they have other sources of food. Thanks.

All I know is sunflower seeds from SunOpta are involved in the recall. I don't know if they supply for animal feed as well. I'd avoid anything with sunflower seeds for animal or human consumption. I've made a point to get my parakeet sunflower seedless food.

Whitestone Feeds, Inc. Announces Voluntary Recall of all JES Premium 40 Tubs

Whitestone Feeds, Inc. has initiated a voluntary recall of a single product from its beef cattle feed line. Effective immediately, all JES Premium 40 Tubs are being recalled. A farm located in Alabama reported that five of its beef cows died after having access to the subject batch of cattle tubs. Samples from the subject batch were assayed following a customer complaint.

While the exact cause of the death remains under investigation, elevated levels of non-protein nitrogen (NPN) may be the cause. Cattle exposed to elevated NPN may exhibit rapid breathing, tremors and slight incoordination followed by severe incoordination, excessive salivation and labored breathing.

The beef cattle product subject to this recall was purchased by two distributors, one in Georgia and one in Alabama, who resold the product to farm supply dealers and ranchers located in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Illinois.

The cattle feed subject to this recall can be identified by its label, which describes the product as “JES Premium 40 Tub” and includes the product number JES 3104-8. The subject batch was manufactured between September 29 to December 15, 2016, and packaged in 250-pound blue plastic tubs.

Cattle producers who have purchased JES Premium 40 Tub labeled as product number JES 3104-8 should discontinue use of the product and return any unused tubs to the place of purchase for a refund of the purchase price. Producers should contact their veterinarian for assistance if their cattle have consumed from tubs of product number JES 3104-8.
