My two current pet peeves:
1. The Great Gatsby. People assuming Daisy is impressed by Gatsby's stash of expensive t-shirts*. Once this is accepted, everything unravels, and the nuanced masterpiece folds into itself and becomes a one-dimensional, cheap shot maoist social satire on the shallowness of the rich in the 1920's.
*(as evident in the 2013 film adaptation of the book)
2. Anna Karenina. People assuming Levin is a Jewish name, and hence, a Jewish character**. Once this is accepted, everything unravels, and the nuanced masterpiece folds into itself and becomes a one-dimensional, poorly researched Barbara Cartland book with cerebral prestige attached.
(**as evident in the casting choice of the 1997 film adaptation of the book)
