Has anyone ever been inspired by a real slim fragment of history or folklore? For instance, I always knew about the story of the Norseman who gave his life on Stamford Bridge, holding off the Saxons so his comrades at arms could prepare for battle, but one day, while watching the History Channel's The Vikings, (Which has many, many historical errors, by the way ) A Ram trucks ad came on that highlighted this little bit of history. And I was provoked by this enough to think "That is an awesome vignette for a story."
Then again, I listen to the old English folk song, "Scarborough Fair and I often wonder, what went wrong in this love story? Someone really ought to write it. LOL.
In my current story, the MC has been knocking about in my head for years, first as a Varangian merchant traveling down the Dnieper River, until he finally evolved into the mercenary from Sweden he is now. His personality has always been larger than life, demanding a presence on the printed page. I don't remember how he first got into my head.
How did everyone else become inspired to write about the characters and in the era they are currently working on? Is there just a particular part of history that inspires you? I love anything prior to the eleventh century in Europe.
