Apparently scientists have now proved beyond any doubt that the Justinianic Plague in the 6th century was cause by Yersinia pestis, the same bacteria responsible for the Black Death almost a century later:

I've heard the theory before but never seen anyone who claimed to be able to prove it before. Since it's pretty cool I thought you people might be interested.

(My apologies for being late to the party - I was traveling much of this week ... then recovering! :)) This touches on the period of my WIP and I've worked off this as the cause anyway, but an interesting piece in any case. Have you seen or read "Catastrophe"? A bit pop-science, but also intriguing research for the period.
