Until recently, I haven't used smileys at this site for expressing with words, but sometimes intended humor and good intentions didn't always get through, so I'm trying them.

As may be expected, action smileys are all the rage at my site for the deaf.

:ty: is the code for thank you, a smiley throwing a kiss.

:deaf: is a smiley with a forefinger moving from ear to mouth, meaning I am deaf.

I tried them here at AW, and they don't work. Is there something I can do to include them in my list of smileys?

After Medievalist checks, if the one you have aren't readily usable here, I can create our own versions.

I've done a mock version of a smiley throwing a kiss and a index finger moving from ear to mouth. Some time when you are online, Chase, I'll run them and see what you think.

I did discover that drawing a smiley puckering up for a kiss can look a little like the Joker if someone is not careful. :)

I didn't explain well at all, which is often the problem with descriptions of ASL signs. So sorry, Alleycat.

For :ty: (also meaning "good"), the hand action goes from mouth to palm up about chin or chest level. There is no literal kiss from the lips for real or in deaf smileys, just a regular smile :) or :D.

Well, good. I thought the smiley throwing a kiss was a little odd anyway.

I've written for permission; it may take me a couple of days to get back—I've got a looming deadline, and have been sick so I'm a bit behind.

You're so kind. Thanks and most importantly get well soon.

:ty: to Alleycat, too. Hope he doesn't think it's SWAK (signing with a kiss).

Thanks for the video, Fenika.

AC, I'd love it if you'd send me a link to the emoticons you're building.

By the way, if anyone knows of a good source of LEGAL avatars that aren't all white people/characters (many avatars of movie characters, actors, and even historical figures aren't legal for me to offer to members because of trademark and copyright issues), I'd really love it if you'd PM the links to either me or AW Admin.

That might be a good question to repeat in the nature thread. Then youd have some animal avs to start.

Thanks, Fenika.

A new member just very gently pointed out to me that our stock avatars are woefully short on PoC options -- animal avvies will help with offering a better range of generic options and we'll look into that, too -- but having some widely varying shades of human skin color is the highest priority, right now.

As it turns out, it's not so easy to find a source as one might think.

I can make whatever you need.

I just had an idea (I have one of those every two years) . . . what about an animated smiley where the colors rotates around? Either nature skin tones or rainbow colors.

Oh cool! I like that idea a LOT, AC. :) Thank you!

I'm frankly embarrassed that I never noticed our monochromatic avatars.

I mean, I knew they mostly sorta suck -- but it just went right by me that they're also distressingly non-representative of our membership.

But we can fix that, even if it means we AW crowd-source it, and make a bunch ourselves.

But damn - you wouldn't think it would be so hard to find a package of avatars we can license and install, that aren't just default caucasian, nor are they ridiculous stereotypes, either. So this is definitely something we're going to need input and assistance from the community, to do well.

Another thought . . . I haven't really looked at them, but it would be easy to change the skin tone of the standard avatars we already have. I would think that would work with the license agreement.

Let me look at our license agreement and check - that might fall under derivative work, and unless that's specifically okayed, I'll need to run that by someone with more legal acumen than me.

As I mentioned, I could do our own and then you wouldn't have to worry about obtaining the rights to use them. I posted in Medi's thread in PoC. If people come up with some ideas I could do the avatars over time.
