I happened to be checking out the local writing scene and came across this post on CL http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/wri/3614657140.html

Have you written a short story or novel? We will buy the Rights (Anywhere)
Full submission guidelines can be found at: http://afterdarkpress.us/submissions

We are a small press publishing house moving towards phase 2 in our growth. At this time we are looking to spotlight the works of others in anthology format or as standalones. The owner of After Dark Press (ADP) is an avid reader and a multi-published author passionate about the craft and dedicated to publishing quality, original works.

Interested authors should send a general letter of interest to [email protected] with:

Ø Your name and contact information
Ø The genre of your novel
Ø Final word count
Ø A short summary of your novel
Ø An attached sample of chapter 1 , 2 and the final chapter (please allow 2-4 weeks for review)

Requirements:
· All submissions must be original works (no plagiarism)
· Adult genres may include but are not limited to: romance, sci-fi, paranormal, mystery, erotica, BDSM, interracial, gothic, multicultural, vampiric or any combination thereof
· Youth genres will be published under the subsidiary BAJAS Publication (website under construction) and may include but not limited to: romance, sci-fi, paranormal, mystery, interracial, multicultural, gothic or any combination thereof
· Min of 15K words
· Although works will go through a rigorous editing process for content, grammar and the like prior to publication, we require all submissions to come to us as clean as possible (Hint: read, re-read. . . hand it to someone else who will be brutally honest to read again before submitting). It is at the discretion of the acquisition editors to accept or reject a submission; therefore an unedited body of work could be rejected as unreadable.
· Submissions should be in Word .RTF format
· While themes containing dubious consent are acceptable please DO NOT submit works with relationships forged from rape
· No incest or sex without a plot
· No esoteric literary submissions that channel the works of the greats. While this genre may speak to your soul and may fit well in college literature courses it's not what we're looking for at ADP.

Payment

Authors will have two funding options:

35% Royalties paid quarterly under a 4 year contract, the author will be credited as such on the published work under their name or a pseudonym of their choosing, the author retains rights at the completion of the contract. Funding will be remitted through Paypal no later than 45 days after a quarter ends (ex: Jan, Feb and March would payout no later than May 15th)

Or

ADP will purchase FULL rights of completed works from authors based on story length for $50-$200 (see the website for more information). The work may be published under a pseudonym of ADP's choosing.

As a general note of expectation, being a published author cannot guarantee a certain level of income unless of course you're Stephanie Meyer, J. K. Rowlings or certain NY Times Best Selling authors. Writing is a labor of love and getting paid to do what you love, well that's just a bonus. Like any other starving artist, writers usually have a gig that pays the bills but their writing keeps them sane. How many actors/waiters or waitresses do you think are out there? The same can be said for writers who are educators, mechanics or a whole host of other occupations. However, with dedication and stick-to-it-ness a promising writer can transition from drawing an occasional small check to making an actual living at the craft.

Remember, when writing for others you have to keep in mind what your audience wants, not just what you want to write. You can stay true to your voice and still author a work which builds readership. Good luck in all your endeavors whether it's with ADP or another publishing outlet.

Happy Writing,

The After Dark Press Submissions Team

Buying of rights raises my red flag immediately but then to see that the going rate is $50-$200 for a 4 year contract sent me over here where I haven't seen anything. Please tell me no one has sold their soul to this "dark" press.

ADP Craigslist Advert:

The whole thing sounds like a bad idea to me but this really worries me because as phrased, it sounds like ADP want a full assignment including moral rights, in which case you'll get the cash but will lose all rights in the work and they'll take ownership of it, including putting their own name on the by-line.

Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

All the books on their website are from the same author and it says this under news:

February 2013 - After Dark Press (ADP) is proud to announce the transition from offering exclusive works of its CEO to open submissions (please see our submissions page for guidelines).

So it's seems like a self-publishing venture that decided to try their hand at publishing others and just began trying to do so last month.
