Some very good and valid points are made on the not killing off a main character thing. I would at the very least take some time to seriously consider that.
however.
I am horrible for this.
With me it's only about the story. I don't care about marketability, about sequels, I have to obey the rule of "what happens?" or it just doesn't work for me.
If you have that kind of feeling about it then go for it, but take the time to really think about it.
I had a similar issue with a book I've worked on. I couldn't figure out if one character lived or died, took me a year to figure that out.
So far as the action scene goes the best advice I could give you is this. Don't go for what peopel will expect.
If you think about it there at things that people expect with the idea of vampires battling, from movies and so forth. If it were me I'd go gritty and realistic and stay away from anything that might even potentially be trite.
