When I come to terms with the fact that my writing sucks -- hey, editing, right? -- I hit the next problem. My editing sucks.

So this is post #52 on this thread, and apparently a lot of us think our writing sucks, at least some of the time, but we keep at it because we're gluttons for punishment...Oh no, wait, we have this driving urge to write, hmm.

Guess I'd better go shot some hops with Quickwit.
*dribbles...damn, lost the ball*

Sparkly vampires-hmph, Hey, my cliche plot line is better than that!

Just keep at it celticroots!

Who knows
I also think my writing sucks. But might as well keep trying, not much point in giving up!

So everyone thinks their writing sucks. Is that not a good thing?

If you were so narcissistic as to think that your writing was great then how could you ever be motivated to improve it?

I think it's by degrees. I've seen writers who are so negative about their writing that it actually became a detriment to their process. It's a wonder they ever put fingers to keyboard again with how they carry on about the magnitude of their suckitudeness.

At some point, you do have to recognize some good in your writing or rewriting, otherwise, it'll never get further than your own hard drive. Looking at what you wrote and saying 'not bad, that's actually pretty good' is not being narcissistic. It's recognizing and acknowledging your strengths as well as your weaknesses.

AW. A very nice place!
... not sure if this counts or not, but I once sucked with my writing.

Was in a restaurant and the waiter forgot to give me a straw.
Taking a sheet of paper from my WIP I rolled it up and used that.
Worked fine for a second or two. Then got drenched and flopped into the cup.
Couldn't even make out the words once I wrung out the soda.
Fortunately had a copy on my comp.
Goes to show the importance of backing things up.

I am going through one of those days where I think my writing sucks. But I keep writing anyway. For me it helps knowing that if I don't like how something turns out, I can edit/rewrite it later.

How do you guys deal with periods where you think your writing sucks?

let's go right for the throat:

For me, there are times I think it might...and maybe it does. Maybe my writing sucks ass. Blows dead bears. Makes God turn away from man as a whole and gives unicorns ulcers and makes eagles drop from the sky, dead from severe retinal bleeding. Makes my grammie blush with embarassment...even post-humously. Maybe it is THAT bad.

So, I can either fix it, or not fix it.

I choose to fix it...or at least, try until I'm certain I have nothing left to try.

I like to torture people. If my writing causes people excruciating pain when they read it, I am satisfied.
