    Undetermined Pay Rate

I'm hoping this is the right place to post this--if not, I'm sure the mods will port me to the correct place.

Musa Publishing is looking for an artist to create the aesthetic for its new steampunk-ish shared world, The Darkside Chronicles, which was created by Richard C. White and myself and with a planned launch of summer, 2013.

The Darkside artist will be responsible for creating the visual aesthetic of the main city where the stories are based (cityscapes and architectural details). Southwatch is a city that not only expanded horizontally, but vertically. This artist will also create visuals for some of the mechanicals that are used in the Darkside world. Artist will also be responsible for creating the image for Darkside book covers.

Because the visual aesthetic is so important to the world as a whole, we will negotiate remuneration with the selected artist. We're not looking for covers on a book by book basis; we're looking for an artist who will create the entire world--maps, website images, reference images, book covers, and promotional art--visually for both our writers and readers.

This is a great opportunity for a young speculative fiction artist to work with some of the best-known authors, a dynamic young publisher, and an incredible shared world where stories can have a science fiction, fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal, noir, or mystery feel. Overall, however, Darkside Chronicles' overriding element will be steampunk, so in our search for an artist that's primarily what we're looking to see.

If interested, please email me at editor (at) musapublishing(dot)com. I'll be happy to forward you the bible of the shared world, so you can get a feel for the world, and to answer any questions you might have. For more information, you can take a look here http://musapublishing.blogspot.com/2...d-project.html.

Thanks for letting me post this, and I look forward to hearing from you!

You're asking for an artist to make a very large commitment of time and work. For the benefit of our members who may wish to consider your offer, may I ask you for more specific information about how much work is required, on what time scale, and on what payment rate and schedule?

Sure. Sorry I didn't see this sooner.

As far as time commitment and scale, at the moment I'm not certain. I know we're looking at a book per month at least for the first year, and perhaps two a month in the second year that we'd want a cover image for--that would involve a flat rate payment for the art. For the rest of the concept--the aesthetic work for the world--I'm planning on a percentage of sales (gross on the Musa website/net at third party dealers) plus an extra flat fee upon completion of the work. Basically, it's a similar deal to what our editors get.

And what will those sales be? Aye, there's the rub. Judging from the submissions and world questions we're getting, I think there's definitely a market for a steampunk shared world and I think that considering some of the authors/stories we're publishing in our speculative fiction imprint and at Penumbra, as well as some of the authors we've invited to participate, that sales will start out good and jump significantly at the end of 2012.

But the reason we're offering a percentage of sales is fairly straightforward: the aesthetic, the visualization of the world, will play a big role in its success. Sure--we could do the covers and the world with the design programs we are using now, using photos and stock images, but we want something more distinctive. So this isn't a job for someone who is used to a high flat rate for a cover image. This is an opportunity for an artist who wants to be involved with a project like this, to build a portfolio, and who isn't opposed to earning royalties on his/her imagery.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to PM me or email me at editor(at)musapublishing(dot)com.

Since this doesn't really fit this thread (it's not a book author and it's not requesting a book cover), I'm porting it over to Nonpaying Markets.
