My spidey sense tells me that it's somewhere, most likely, in the 60-65% range. Not that my spidey sense means much, of course.

I haven't heard a reply since I emailed them asking for clarification on which of my two were rejected.

I know a few people who tried to e-mail for information and it came back to them as an invalid address. Not sure why that could happen. Fully inbox? Too many at one time?

Newbie here. I have been stalking this post for a couple weeks now but just signed up today. I submitted a paranormal romance on Oct 6th and have yet to hear back. I am nervous but i dont have high hopes. My story doesnt seem as "sci fi" as i think they may be looking for. But i wont give up all hope until i get my rejection letter. Nice to meet you all!

Eileen said "bummer" and posted a rejection letter verbatim and then said good luck to everyone else. It doesn't sound fuzzy to me. If that is truly the case, then I'm sorry, Eileen, and that goes for everyone else who got the R today. Whoever pointed out that it's going to get harder and harder is absolutely correct. My stomach's been in knots all day long.

Just to clarify - yes I did receive the big R. Thanks for the condolences and sorry for any confusion.

The original list

Here's another spin on submissions. Of the lists Nick has compiled, when you look at the last one before the rejections started coming in and people adding in, there were 37 members who submitted 48 manuscripts.
All the new adds have joined after the rejections began so I doubt anyone who was rejected is about to join, only survivors. The new ones have skewed the numbers.
Of that old list, between REJECTIONS and NO RESPONSES, there are 27 manuscripts. I'm inclined to consider the no responses as being rejected.

01..JJdebenedictis, submitted 1 manuscript on 10/01/12, REJECTED
02...Saanen, submitted 2 fantasy manuscripts on 10/01/12, BOTH REJECTED
03...thothguard51, submitted 1 Epic Fantasy manuscript on 10/01/12, outcome...?

09...A.P.M, submitted 2 YA manuscripts on 10/01/12, BOTH REJECTED
10...Michael Drakich, submitted 3 manuscripts on 10/01/12, outcome...?
11...GeorgeK, submitted 2 manuscripts, 1 Fantasy and 1 SF on 10/05/2012, NO RESPONSE

17...Evelyn, submitted 1 SF manuscript on 10/05/2012, REJECTED18...Andrea GS, submitted 2 manuscripts on 10/13/2012, I REJECTED
19...Miguelito, submitted 2 Fantasy manuscripts, 1 on 10/04/2012, and 1 on 10/12/2012, I REJECTED
20...Retlaw, submitted 1 mystery, 10/14/2012, NO RESPONSE
21...Amadan, submitted 1 manuscript on 10/13/2012?, outcome...?
22...Mistri, submitted 1 manuscript on 10/14/2012, outcome...?
23...Lineykin, submitted 1 manuscript on 10/14/2012, NO RESPONSE
24...M R Mortimer, submitted 1 manuscript on 10/07/2012, NO RESPONSE
25...N.P. Browning, submitted 1 manuscript on 10/07/2012, REJECTED
26...Cally W, submitted 1 manuscript on 10/13/12, REJECTED
27...Espresso5, submitted 1 manuscript on 10/14/12, REJECTED
28...JRVogt, submitted 1 urban fantasy, 10/02/2012, NO RESPONSE
29...VeggieNeko, submitted 1 YA Fantasy, 10/14/2012, NO RESPONSE
30...JanDarby, submitted 2 manuscripts, 1 urban fantasy on 10/01/2012 and 1 dystopian on 10/02/2012, NO RESPONSE
31...Omnigon, submitted 1 Epic Fantasy, 10/13/2012, outcome...?
32...WarpedReality, submitted 1 YA Fantasy, 10/14/2012, outcome...?

34...RemusShepherd, submitted 1 YA SF, 10/01/2012, outcome...?
35...Xenith, submitted 1 fantasy, 10/02/2012, NO RESPONSE
36...Link_389, submitted 1 Epic Fantasy, 10/01/2012, NO RESPONSE
37...BlinkerBot, submitted 1 Epic Fantasy, 10/06/2012, outcome...?

That works out to a 56.25% rejection rate or 2567 rejected leaving 1998 remaining mathing down to a 1/166 chance of being selected as one of the 12.

I suspect this ratio is much closer to accurate than the current one with all the new add ins.

Hey Nick, I think she got rejected. in post 296 she wrote -

Hugs to everyone who's gotten the rejection notice. :Hug2:Do you have plans to submit somewhere else next?

And good luck to everyone who hasn't heard yet!

She doesn't exactly say she got rejected but it reads to me that way. Your opinion?

Michael, I can feel your suffering from here (which is a long way away)

chin up.

Looking at Nick's list, it seems to me that HV have barely scraped the surface.

Unless of course, AW members really are different from the average jo/joe...

Nick, I counted your list several times last night and again just now and each time I come up with 31 rejections, not 32. Someone else please double check me?
Michael, I disagree with your interpretation of #33; she's just being gracious to others.
Paul, Michael's analysis matches fairly roughly with my calculations, so naturally I agree with him there, although I think it's taking things too far to calculate people's chances as if all things were equal. This is a subjective business. However, I do think this list reflects a higher talent pool of writers--and yes I've said it before. It's okay to be proud, people! We all should be at this point!
And no, I was definitely NOT a cheerleader in school. Heehee.

I remember Leanan's post and she was the first one that I had to question, "was this a rejection notice to the group, or not." In the end, I felt as if she was just responding to the AW members who had gotten rejections. For that reason, I left her as no response. Of course, if she is still around, she can correct me if need be...

I'm like you, I feel that some of the no responses are rejections, but not all.

Take my submission for example, I got the confirmation, but I have not gotten a notice of rejection, or still in review. If HV had not revised their policy, then I would have noted my own as no response after 1/16/2012 as, no response = rejection. There is also the fact that some members are still responding with rejections, we had what, 3 yesterday? So I don't think its safe to assume every no response at this point = rejection.

What I wish I would have done is find out word counts of the submissions. Why?

Well is it possible that HV is working through the smaller word count submission first as they take less time? Who knows? But had I gotten word counts to add into the mix, it might show us how HV is going through the submissions. Or not.

And just for shits and giggles, mine was 105,000 words and is the first in a trilogy, even though the book stands alone.

I have extended our submission tracking dead line to March 1st and I will change any no response to no response = rejection, which is what it would have been on 1/16/2012 had HV not revised their policy.

CatherineS, another good catch, just counted them again, and 31 appears correct. Thanks for the second pair of eyes...again.

@Nick, Again, at a glance I'd say they're going on genre/ fit, not word length.

The criteria is close to what you mentioned before. It seems epic, urban, dystopian and YA fantasy are the stuff they want, and therefore prob getting a second glance.

logically I assume it's a 'when you want to stop reading it, reject it' approach, or something similar.

It's annoying that they don't post some form of update. Anything.

I'll settle for a 'we're not going to post an update', update.

I dunno.

looking through the list, the majority who have not responded, I believe would post if they received a rejection.

At very best we're talking 45% have been rejected.

I reckon another 25% will be rejected within the next 6/7 days.

after that...difficult to say

Nick, are you taking roll call on word count now? For what it's worth, mine is 99K, first in a series, but I seriously doubt that anyone has taken the trouble to triage the subs according to length. What matters here is hitting the right zone. They will stop reading any manuscript that heads in the wrong direction.

Also, I can't imagine any author not checking the HV website just out of curiosity sometime in the past month. A couple of them, perhaps, but 38%??? No way--it just doesn't compute with human nature.

Where's Omni?? We need new bar graphs and pie charts!

Yours truly, the group rabble rouser.

I can't agree with this list of genres. You make no mention of science fiction. Seeing as 2 of the 3 I submitted were scifi and they are still in the running I would think otherwise.

In the meantime, thank you Leanan-Sidhe for the clarification. My apologies for thinking you gone.

As to word count, Mine were as follows. 105,000, 73,000 and 69,500. Yes the last one was below the minimum required but it didn't seem to get it booted so I guess there must have been wiggle room.

I'm sorry to hear about those who've gotten rejections. I hope that you turn around and resub somewhere else, then kick proverbial publishing ass. :)

Word count, genre, etc. does not matter. Quality matters, my friends. I know why I was rejected-- my manuscript was not ready for prime time. All your graphs, assumptions, predictions mean nothing. If your work is good, they will publish it.

Agreed about the quality part, SKD, but gosh all of this graphing and wild speculating keeps a person busy! I'm getting pretty worn out from all this fanning of the flames.

Truth be told, this is way more fun than sitting around waiting for agents to reply....or not.....in isolation, with no one around to commiserate with. My poor editor is a martyr to my usual whining, but I bet she's about ready to string me up over this particular business.

Their mistake was they gave us a specific deadline. Our mistake was checking the website and seeing that update. :)
