I've just blogged about a visit to Fort Belan on the North Wales coast. It's a unique maritime fort started in 1775. Its story includes the American War of Independence, Napoleonic alarms, landowners' response to the Rebecca Riots and on into the 21st century. It's been converted to holiday cottages now, so writers in search of inspiration can stay there. I found it fascinating. Maybe it will inspire someone. http://thewhiterajah.blogspot.co.uk/2017/06/fort-belan.html

I have to say, the blog post I recently mentioned here seems more apropos than ever: Why the Civil War Happened and Why it Matters.

But I've also blogged a bit about other things:

...And the Great War [I went to an exhibit of WW1 medical items at the Smithsonian American History museum]
...And a Shilling [why I bought myself a 1913 shilling coin]
...And the Virginia Room and Manassas [about a recent "field trip" for Civil War research and a hike]

Also, I saw a few historical(ish) movies:
...And Wonder Woman
...And The Beguiled

I'm not an expert on the law (though I have spoken to a lawyer). I try to use my own photographs (I take a lot specially) or those gathered from Wikis with a clear statement that they are in the public domain. Some other sites specifically allow use on blogs (though they may insist that the blog doesn't carry advertising, which is something to look out for.)I use cover images and other promotional material on the grounds that the copyright owners are trying to promote these things so they'd be nuts to limit their use (provided you are being positive about the thing being promoted). I always ask guest bloggers to confirm that they are not using copyright images. Often they don't bother, which is annoying.

I will use images that include me, whether or not they are copyright. If they want to sue, I'll sue back for unlicensed use of my image.

Just be careful and don't merrily use any old images. (I put a copyright note on most of my own now, because I'm fed up of people stealing them.)

Jennifer Macaire guests on my blog this week, writing about the research behind her brilliant 'Time for Alexander' series.

My history blog is clickable in my signature. It is mostly about Mediaeval and Roman history and my travels which involve lots of visits to old castles, cathedrals and other interesting historical sites. Since I'm a hobby photographer, there are a lot of pics to go with the texts.

I should update more often, though. But Nano, Christmas preparations and a nasty sucker of a cold got in the way those last months. I hope I'll do better in the new year.

Hello again, all!

I have a few posts to share from my trip last month to the U.K. My trip was (unsurprisingly) pretty history-oriented, though there was also some Harry Potter thrown in there, as well as Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland, though those two are historical in themselves.

Anyway:

http://www.elizabethhuhn.com/2018/09/and-london-of-peter-pan.html
[Part 1 of day 1, in which I arrive in London and look for sites related to JM Barrie and the boys who inspired him to write Peter Pan.]

[Part 2 of day 1. This one's pretty much Harry Potter-themed, but enjoy!]

http://www.elizabethhuhn.com/2018/10/and-barts-and-trains-and-edinburgh.html
[Day 2, in which I visit St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, travel to Edinburgh, and see some beautiful scenes (also some Harry Potter stuff going on here).]

http://www.elizabethhuhn.com/2018/10/and-edinburgh-and-touch-of-haltwhistle.html
[Day 3, in which I visit Holyrood Palace and the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh and take train to Haltwhistle.]

More will be on their way--days 4, 5, 6, and 7: Hadrian's Wall, Haworth and the Brontes, Oxford, and more London. Stay tuned. I'm sure you're all on the edges of your seats!

Hi, all!

I've been more lax than I would like in my blogging. I finally put up blog posts about my trip to the U.K. two months after I got back, lol.

I was more prompt in posting about my costuming adventure. As I explain in the blog, I got it into my head to attempt to sew an 1860s dress in spite of being a complete novice at sewing. I did it, though it wasn't without difficulties (warning, it's pretty long, but there ARE pictures!):
