So I was in a round table at the Killer Nashville conference last weekend and received a request for my recently finished M.S. from Natalia Aponte and Victoria Lea of Aponte Literary.

From what I can see on their website, they seem reputable, but there's honestly not a great deal there. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Thanks in advance!

Near as I can tell, perfectly good agency. They sold books to Tor and Forge Books.

That's what I thought, and those are two of my dream publishers, so I suppose some part of me just finds it too good to be true.

I did some more research over the last couple of days.

Speaking with Patrick Taylor, I learned nothing but good things about Natalia Aponte. Jon Land called her "...one of the smartest, and also most compassionate people I've run across in the industry." My pal Alex Bledsoe, author of Dark Jenny and The Hum and the Shiver, says his own editor at Tor worked with her for some time and thinks highly of her.

I can't tell from their webpage, but they ask for three chapters or 50 pages and don't seem to specify whether to attach them or paste them into the email. Anyone have thoughts?

Natalia is incredibly talented and certainly someone you want on your side. Query away!

Do I see both supernatural fiction AND any genre of mainstream fiction?

Might my favorite genre,horror,be acceptable?

*lips quivering*

I am a bit confused here. When they say cover letter,is this just another name for query?

If anyone cares to answer,I'd appreciate it!

I see she used to be an editor for Tor and Forge. That's a bonus.

Anyone hear back on a query yet?

I don't see her listed in the AAR database, but I guess that's not really abnormal.

I have received a reply on my query, and was advised that they will not accept a novella, which I knew from the start. However, Victoria Lea took the time to read the MS and provided me with some great advice about expanding it.

I submitted my pages as a word document and the file was accepted without comment.

GOOD LUCK, ALL!

For an unsolicited query, though, you should paste the pages unless the agency guidelines specifically state to attach and what file formats are accepted.

For requested materials, attachments are usually welcome.

Kitty - yes I just sent a query and first 3 chapters. I think they're using "cover letter" interchangeably there.

Agonyzer - congrats on the generous feedback and good luck with the expansion. Ms. Lea seems quite nice; I'm hoping to hear back on mine as well.

Good luck, everyone!

Anyone hear more on them? I just received a request for a full. I noticed a lot of their books are published with Tor. I suppose since Mrs. Aponte has connections there that Tor works well with her.

Don't forget that Tor is part of Macmillian. The fact that she was an editor for Tor for a couple decades is a huge plus. I contacted a couple of her authors and they had wonderful things to say about her. I think she would be a tremendous agent to have on your side.

Good luck!

Actually I did forget. They have so many imprints. That's one of the big six right?

Not sure if my book would fit that imprint. That's if I even get that far. It's a young adult mystery/thriller. They have a Tor Teen too, but I'm confused doesn't Tor accept YAs or only through their Tor Teen line?

I think Ms. Aponte, while having a history with Tor/Forge/Macmillan, will be quite comfortable dealing with all the major presses. That said, yes, Macmillan is one of the "big six."

Victoria Lea is my literary agent at Aponte Literary. I can't say enough good things about her. I pasted the sample pages into my query and then sent the full as an attachment. She received my full on a Friday and offered representation on Monday. Not only is she helping me edit my manuscript, but she is an expert in P.R. Talk about my being blessed!

Way to go, Codeorange! This agency looks top-notch! Care to share what genre you write, just so those people see what genres Ms. Lea is acquiring at the moment?

Profen4,

Thank you for the congratulations. I'd love to share more about Aponte Literary. I sent a character-driven, literary/suspense piece. Ms. Lea liked my quirky/offbeat style. I was worried if an agent would like the ending of my 95,000-word piece. Luckily, victoria loved it. She said she is tired of all the Hollywood cookie-cutter happy endings. I am surprised that this agency hasn't been mentioned before. Everyone should check out their website. If all literary agencies ran their business like Aponte the complaint forums toward literary agents would dry up.

You've definitely caught my attention, codeorange. :) I've sent a submission over. It's YA though so I don't know if that will be to Ms Lea's fancy.

It would be Ms. Aponte's forte (though it might be what Ms. Lea is looking for too.).

Thanks Profen4. Where did you find the info on their preferences? I managed to miss it when navigating their site.
