This thread is for people to ask questions about terms or abbreviations that are not in the Absolute Write Dictionary, and to suggest terms or additions to the dictionary.

I saw in QLH something that said "RYWF" still applies in QLH and was curious as to what that stood for?

RR, R/R. or R&R

I noticed this doesn't appear in either the AW dictionary or Cathy C's publishing terms glossary. From context, I take it this is shorthand for revise and resubmit, but you know what they say about assuming.

Am I close?

Yep. On the nose, even. I'll add it in a bit. Thanks for the heads-up!

What does LBL mean?

Line by line. It's when someone gives a heavy critique on something in share your work (SYW), down to grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. as opposed to simply giving general comments.

Translated.
I had to look up TIL the other day (Today I Learned).

Possible other additions: QUILTBAG and "Schrodinger's Rapist."

ETA: "pantsing/pantser"

A suggestion and a question:

I noticed that even though some other common, non-writing-specific abbreviations/acronyms/initialisms like FYI and IIRC are present in the list, IMO/IMHO (in my (honest) opinion, depending on the form chosen) isn't listed there.

Also, is there a reason NaNoWriMo is repetitively spelled out as "NANOWRMO" in the dictionary? Thrice in a row, so I suspect it of not being a typo...still, since the subforum linked to uses the version with an i in it, it looks a bit...strange XD

(Also, I hope that due to this being a suggestion/question thread, it's acceptable for me to post here approx. a year after the last post? If not, 'pologies and please feel free to delete my post)

EDIT: And another suggestion--POD, or Print on Demand, isn't in the list either.

Necroing this thread with a purpose, since I'm updating the list.

New users and old, what terms and abbreviations do you see in use here that you didn't/don't understand besides those listed at the AbsoluteWrite Dictionary?

That's one I don't see, but I'm sure it depends on where you hang out. Happy to add it. It used to be what I wrote and most of what I read. My, how things change, huh?

Those of you who spend time talking social issues, are there any additions that might mystify someone stopping at P&CE for the first time?

Maryn, who still reads TSM

RYFW, sadly.

That one, I got. I'm also adding NYT and WaPo, since they come up in P&CE--which I'm also adding.

Maybe I should revisit the list we cobbled together for the adults-only board. It might have a few that transcend erotica.

I had to Google TFG, so maybe add that. The Former Guy is what I found. A way not to use Trump's name, I gather. And Brigid beat me to it. Was I right?

You are indeed. And that's an addition we should have.

Is there a need for IDK (I don't know), TBH (to be honest), etc? And international terms like wanker?

There's need for everything, yet I don't want the list to be crazy-long. (I had TBH, at least.)

I have some internet abbreviations, but I don't really have a feel for what ones absolutely everyone knows and which ones people have to look up, like I do so often.

I especially lack not-American terms and the subtleties of their meanings. Care to write a brief definition of wanker? What other words appear here that might befuddle US users?

GQP is one I see fairly often in P&CE. I'm guessing it's something to do with the GOP, but I don't know if it's an attempt to mislead searches or something else.

I think it conflates the GOP with Qanon.
