I have a question about using music in a film.

Hey, if there's some uncopyrighted music you want to use on youtube that's just by someone and you want to use it for your film but you can't get the permission from the person to use it, can you just use it anyway, since by it being on Youtube.com, it's free for grabs anyway?

My understanding is that music, like writing, is copyrighted upon the moment of saving it to a fixed medium. So whether the composer or performer registered a copyright for it or did not, it's still theirs and others do not have a right to use it for their own purposes. The 'fair use' exceptions are pretty limiting, mainly academic and satiric in nature.

No that's helpful for me to know, I guess I just have to choose something else. It's just that the music is PERFECT for my film but the user hasn't logged onto Youtube in MONTHS so I'm like---there's no way to contact her to get permission. *sigh* :( lol
