Bodin Publishing Inc. looks very new to me. Web site: http://bodinpubinc.com/Home_Page.php

I'm curious because the site's main page states that:

Bodin Publishing Incorporated is a Publisher for all digital media, from books to apps. Using not only gadgets but also social media to bring entertainment in all forms.

We are excited to meet new writers, artists, musicians and game designers.
They're taking on a variety of projects, but I can't find any information on the site about the people behind this publisher. I'd think that they'd need a diverse lineup of people (talking about their qualifications and experience, of course) in order to make this work.

The artwork in the gallery (a manga style drawing of a female angel wearing a bandage) is signed Rebecca L Bodin - I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark and suggest she may be the person/one of the persons behind Bodin Publishing.

A quick google of her name brings back nothing obvious.

The only published book listed is a collection of poetry defined in its Amazon blurb as a "portfolio of sorts". The publisher is also not listed on the Amazon page (which is usually what you see with the self-pubbed stuff, IIRC).

The submission guidelines read ... off to me, but I can't quite put my finger on why. They also have a typo (else where instead of elsewhere).

Their "who we are" page states (with my bolding highlighting a further comprehension issue):

Our company was created as a source of new media distribution. We believe that with the arrival of the 21st century the distortion of media has brought out a chaos factor. We can laser to a fine organized position of talent and media process. We believe that all artists must have an avenue where they can sell their work in a fair and competitive market place, enabling them to create the masterpieces of our generation. We provide that space and are currently in search of writers, artists, game designers, musicians and more.

From this, I'm not clear what they actually do - I'd assumed they were a multi-media publisher, but this makes them sound like a marketplace of sorts. They state they are a distributor, so

Where did you hear about them, Sarah?

Can someone explain how you "publish" music?

Publishing music is quite lucrative if one has popular songs/hits. It concerns the writing out of the music in notation (with lyrics, if appropriate) and selling the rights to buy and play it. Public performance I think requires different rights, but I'm not up on the ins and outs.

Don't know if that is what she meant, of course :).

So it's basically like printing the songs in a way that people can play it?

For some reason I would have thought this was only done for famous music. Is there an industry for amateurs to do this? *Is asking because her brother is a musician who writes his own music*

They look very very new, given that their forum has zero posts on it and they've only published one book (which is 18 pages long, and which they provide a broken link to). The website doesn't look hugely professional to me, and there's a dearth of information.

The description on Amazon, presumably edited by the publisher, does not inspire confidence:
This book, has many short stories and poems, and does not look like a traditional book with chapters.

Wait a year and see.

For a company that specializes in 21st century technology, the broken link is not a good signal...

Go in a music store and look at the racks of sheet music and music books. Those are works of published music.

Not sure what you're asking. How do you get your own music published? Just like words. Find a music publisher who wants to publish it. Sheet music and music books identify the publishers on the front or back page. A composer makes a publishing deal with the publisher for publishing rights.

I expect only the (fairly) famous music sells. But if self-publishing books has become easy to do, can self-publishing music be far behind?

I have given this a great deal of thought over the years. I compose and arrange and used to teach.

A big problem is copyright if your publication will be, for example, new arrangements of the works of others.

If you wish to publish your original compositions, copyright is not an issue. But distribution is. Most songwriters who find success do so by hooking up with a performer who has a following and who will record the songs. I've never seen sheet music being sold from the bandstand alongside the CDs.

The marketplace for published music is much smaller, too. It is restricted to people who can read music and who care to and are able to play the kind of music you publish.

There is a marketplace of music teachers who would have their students buy study books that teach in ways the typical student understands. All you have to do is reach the teachers.

An email to their site brought this response;

Hello,
The next step in this process is to send your manuscript for us to review. We only accept online submissions which are to be sent via email, word documents are best. Our submission guidelines can be found on our website. Please send these to [email protected].
After we review the manuscript and accept we will present a contract and proposal.
Thank you for your interest,
Victoria Alvarenga

The Google search on Victoria brought varied results. Anyone know of her?

I found a company profile page which specifies Victoria Alvarenga as Executive admin, and Barbara Bodin as President.

Barbara Bodin brings back no obvious results connected with publishing. I wonder if this is her on LinkedIn - there are three Barbara Bodins, this one is in the Greater Atlanta Area and Bodin publishing has an address in Conyers. She's described as an Independent Education Professional and the president of the mysterious Bodin Academy - I can't find out what that is using Google.

I wonder if Victoria Alvarenga was formerly Victoria Bodin of Marietta, who has experience as an Intern in Georgia Southern University's Writing and Linguistics department.
Normally I wouldn't speculate, but we've got a Bodin as president and a Bodin supplying artwork. It may well be a family business.

Biggest red flag for me at the moment is the utter lack of experience to be found about any of these people. Give them a couple of years and see what they're doing then.

And yes, I am slightly scared by me right now. The internet - she has ... information.

Somebody from Bodin posted a call for authors at another forum. Days have passed since then and the user hasn't been back, much less answered questions in that thread.

Because of that and their Web site's lack of basic information, I'm skeptical at best. I can't think of any reason to put together a submission to Bodin.

The first sentence is meaningless. The second is a train wreck.

Avoid.

We would like to apologize for the misspellings and the lack of information that occured on our website this past summer. As we were in the beginning stages of creating a company, there were a few kinks. Now that we are up and running, we are sure that there will be a few more. We have already sold many works and we have many artists and writers working with us. Please feel free to revisit our website at bodinpubinc.com or our store at shop.bodinpubinc.com. Thank you.

What the heck?....

One of Bodin's 'books' is twenty pages long and can be read in full on bookrix.com. The editing leaves something to be desired:

"Well king it is the fall of souls that ignites an emerald dream," Witch said.
"Do not do anything you will regret we can offer you freedom," King said.

Even after reading the blurb I have no idea what Bodin's single non-fiction book Storm is about. Perhaps they could add a 'look inside' feature?

There's also a graphic novel, parts of which can be read here http://graphicly.com/japeth-harrison/blood-eden/gn. Count the typos!

http://bodinpubinc.com/Process_for_Writers.html

Our process for writers:

 • Submit a manuscript to {redacted} for review.
 • We will then contact writer with contracts.
 • Writer signs and sends contracts to our office.
 • We contact writer with questions about logistics of the book. (Title, Price, Cover Art)
 • Writers work is up for sale!
Anybody else note that one missing step? An important, crucial step? A step that every book needs to go through before publication?

From the "Books" page:

We do not publish hard copies of any manuscript, due to our green initiative, but we do publish ebooks that are available for viewing on any device.

Green initiative? Well, okay, I'll take that as an excuse for not publishing a hard copy. (It's not a good excuse, because authors like nothing more than having a book in their hand, but an excuse nonetheless.)

But there's no excuse for this:

We sale on our site Bodin Media.
They're not inspiring much confidence.

Also, where on their site? I could only find one book through their webpage?

You have to go to the separate "shop" subdomain to find the others. Their listings are extremely minimal -- they don't tell you what format the file is in, and at least one of them doesn't even list the author's name. The one that I spot-checked doesn't seem to be listed on Amazon, just the publisher's site.

Hover over the "Home Page" tab to bring up the drop down menu and then select "Bodin Media."

The store really needs to be easier to find - as in front and center on the main page - or there won't be much 'sales' going on.

I got to the shop by clicking on the magazine link on the front page.

Oh, sweet mother of macrame. I just saw the title of their magazine. There was a gay pr0n magazine popular in the 80's with a similar title. NOT. A GOOD. IDEA.

http://shop.bodinpubinc.com/Stokes-Magazine-V1-I1-20-1.htm

And I just noticed: the title of the magazine is misspelled in the link.

My first guess from the name was NSFW stuff, even without knowing about the existing magazine. I'm guessing that's probably not accurate, given the rest of the site's content? But the lack of description for what *is* in the mag doesn't help matters....

It calls it a literary mag, but I had the same reaction -- must be gay male porn!
