I want to try pitching to a foreign magazine but obviously I can't get copies because they're abroad - anyone got a way around this?

Perhaps they have a Website you could have a look at. This may seem like a no-brainer, but magazine Websites tend to run a lot of content from their print versions, so they are effective tools to study the particular market you're targeting.
You could also see if someone is willing to send over a copy to you on one of those book/magazine swapping sites. Try bookmooch for starters.
Sometimes you can ask the marketing department of the concerned publication to send you a sample copy, if all else fails. At the very worst, you'll have to pay for it.
