instead of quotation marks I am getting black bars. Do you know how to convert correctly?

There's not really a great way to do it. You might be better off just opening Word, opening Notepad, and then copying, using "Paste special" in word to ensure there is no additional formatting of text when you move it.

Or did you mean the other way around?

That's smartquotes turned on. The answers you've been given should fix them. Or turn them off in Word. Under Autocorrect.

But I don't think turning them off will undo the ones you already have.

Find and replace ' with ' and then " with " -- that should do the trick. I have to do that from time to time to convert straight quote marks to curlies (after I've pasted from other documents). Should work the other way around, too.

BTW, FWIW, I just pasted a paragraph with curly quotes from Word to Notepad. Got curly quotes in Notepad. No black bars. Dunno what would produce a different result.

I'm using Office 2007.
