I keep trying to read Sharkbite my favorite stories from childhood. Onions, ONIONS I TELL YOU. Gah. I have no idea how my mom ever got through these sob-fests. Tackled my favorite tonight - the Velveteen Rabbit - and fortunately he fell asleep halfway through because I was bawling like a baby.

That one ALWAYS gets me. At a cousin's wedding last year, one of the readings was a scene from that book, when they talk about what it means to be real when you're truly loved, how once you're all beat up and worn and nothing matters except the love that made you real. Me = bawling at the ceremony.

trinza, are youa pantser too?

it definitely is challenging. i hit 35k
(more than half way) and am taking
a break.

Yep! I tend to have ideas for a few big events within the story, but that's about it and even those usually change while I'm writing the story. Mostly, I write and just make a lot of notes as I go.

Oh, the wonderful word of pantsers!

Congrats on hitting 35K! That's fantastic. I just hit 28K and I'm feeling like a break would be nice right about now. I'm definitely taking a break for the night, at least!

Dawn, hugs. Not something you want to here, even if it's sort of a reverse badge of honor.

Jo, I don't read the sad books to my kids. They don't need Charlotte's Web or Hans Christian Anderson. Happy endings! We need happy endings. They definitely prefer happy middles too -- don't like the trauma characters go through on the way.

Nooooooooo! I JUST stopped crying, and you go and... ::choke:: ;)

Awww, I love Charlotte's Web! :) I'm of the GK Chesterton philosophy - "Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed."

Speaking of Anderson, I just read the original Little Mermaid story. SO GOOD.

No sex between minors. At all. I think it can be implied because my other books have been okay. But the opening scene & a later one are too explicit, I guess. They didn't say which ones, but I have a good guess.

Wow. :Wha:

Guys, I'm dancing a little, even though I have a toothache-ha! My agent sent me a card and a present! It says the nicest things, I swear I want to frame it. And my book has yet to sell, so it feels even better somehow.

Dawn, that's so weird. Could you get around it if you classed it as adult fiction rather than YA? Well, I guess it's probably across the board, isn't it. Hm. Strange.

So my publisher sent my typeset pages to my old address, which I discovered earlier today when I inquired about their arrival time. BUT! Publisher is now overnighting them, so I will get them tomorrow. Extra bonus: I went by my old house and put a note on the door and they called to say they have the package! Which means I will now be in possession of TWO typeset pages. So I can keep one. Hee hee. ::hoards::

Jo, that's awesome!

Er, what are the typeset pages, exactly? Are they like pre-ARCs? For editorial? *clueless*

I know, I was totally confused too. Okay, so first was copyedits, which was after the copyeditor went through everything. I got a word file with all the changes highlighted and I had to go through and accept or reject them. THEN the book went to the typesetter, which is where it gets laid out for how it will look on the actual pages. So I am getting a hard copy which is basically like photocopies of each specific page in the book. I get to run through it one more time and try to catch any last typos. Then in about 3 weeks I will get ARCs, which I think are actually the text from this typesetting, so if there are typos they will still exist in the ARC.

So -
Copy edits
typeset pages
ARC
final printing

Apparently some people do the typeset stuff digitally as well, but S&S seems kinda old school so far.

ETA: I was even more confused because my editor calls ARCs "galleys."

Oh. That is weird--I would have though the typeset pages were analogous to the old galleys.

They're known as first pass pages at my pub. I've only ever gotten one pass but I know books that have gone through second pass pages as well. My editor deals with those and emails me specific questions. Basically, last chance to catch typos or inconsistencies, though I'm not allowed any big changes.

I couldn't read that one to my boy. I still get choked up thinking about that story.

Cool on the galleys.

I got nothing. Finally put down a decent word count last night (for me these days) so I'm just a line or two away from the end of this freebie short.

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, TIM.

note to self: if self pubbing, don't
use smashwords.

The reason they have to be careful with scenes between minors is due to Paypal coming down on business going through them with explicit content last year. Paypal's initial requirements were WAY more strict, but with some further discussion, they backed off to things that are specifically illegal.

Dawn, if your characters having sex are of age in the location they do it, you could contact SW through the comments/questions link about getting the book approved.

They're really just trying to keep child porn off the site in written form, so there will be some flags that come up automatically that might not actually be bad in context. See 9b of the TOS.

Cindy, avoiding SW means you couldn't distribute to many e-book retailers and library buyers, so no, a self-publisher doesn't want to avoid them. What you want to avoid is explicit sex in YA stories.

Hey ya! Greetings from Tunxi, Anhui! I did make it out to a quaint (sorta) village today, Hongcun, which is one of the main locations in Crouching Dragon etc. I had quite the conversation over lunch in a tiny farmer's restaurant. I mean, can you call it a restaurant if you're in someone's downstairs room and there's one table? It was really fun. Sometimes my Chinese doesn't totally suck. The main problem with it is that my accent is good and people think I know more than I do. Anyway, all this traveling alone is really good for that. I've had plenty of interaction, plenty of friend time, and lots of time to think. Hopefully this will all translate into a book, somehow.

Repped as I went.

Morning, all.

More yays for Kellion!

(((Dawn))) How frustrating but, uh, also go you!

Headache seems to have passed at long last. Thanks for all the hugs and reps. I just hope it stays away.

Sounds like an interesting trip, OL. I have trouble wrapping my head around China because it's so big and is changing so fast -- your dispatches are fascinating.

Sounds like SW's rules might be hard to navigate -- laws about consent etc. are strange because they are such a patchwork, and in some states perfectly normal relatinships are illegal, and in others very squicky ones are not. It puts a burden on literature if we cannot portray healthy relationships between the young -- or unhealthy ones.

Kell, in the interests of research (no, really!) I'm going to stay at a Holid@y 1nn in Hefei tomorrow. And then I'm gonna ride the high speed train to Beijing.

For contrast sake, I think I'm doing hard seats or something sort of awful for the trip from Tunxi to Hefei tomorrow AM. As long as the train has beer....

Morning, everyone!

OL, sounds like a really fun trip! And if it all translates into a book, even better.

Cricket, that's so nice about the card and gift! Getting a card in the mail is such a little thing that can instantly brighten someone's day. Speaking of, I really need to send my holiday cards out... gah!

Niyrak, congrats on IW! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you having an AWESOME book birthday.

It's been raining here all night and I think it's supposed to rain all day, now. I don't want to go out into the real world! It's nice and warm in here.

Mornin' folk!

Once again, I spend the day cleaning up after a mess caused by Flaky Boss's complete and total inability to give us information we NEED to have to do our jobs. *sigh*

Spent yesterday toying with Sekrit Project instead of editing NoFA. If I don't finish SOMEthing, my betas are going to kill me.
