You know, right now I'm watching old Gong Show clips on youtube and I have to say, there was some seriously crazy stuff on that show. Chuck Barris swears he never did coke because he's a bit OCD and he knew it would kill him, but watching those clips makes me wonder.

 Google the term "Gong Show" with the word "Popsicle"... You will not be disappointed. Chuck Barris was completely off his head if he thought he could do whatever the hell he wanted on that show, though - to his credit - he managed to get away with a lot more than I thought he would have given the time that show was produced...

I don't honestly know if it's gotten more strange or less so since the advent of cable. I remember when being stuck sick at home meant either game shows or soap operas or whatever was on PBS.

And some of those game shows are just bizarre, to say the least.

Some Italian gameshows seem to be an excuse to show as much flesh as they can without offending the Powers That Be in charge of keeping the stations' content on the level...

Pfft. Nowhere near as strange as Japanese game shows.
Heck yeah. I remember one where the whole point of the show was to scare the contestant (Japanese) by trapping him with a white American(s) in a hostile situation. One in particular was a private poker room at a casino. It was apparently especially scary because some of them were wearing cowboy hats and doing all sorts of "crazy" American things. I think the hostile part was that they accused him of cheating or something. I can't remember exactly.

The host of the show stood outside with a camera and laughed while inside the room the Japanese contestant thought he was gonna get the sh*t kicked out of him, or worse.

It was sorta like twisted candid camera.

Ugh. Candid Camera was... not good. Borderline evil a fair proportion of the time.

Whenever I see The Crazy while I am out and about, I still think of that show.

You know, I used to watch it when I was a kid. Fascinated by the concept, but somehow mixed on my feelings about it.

Now? I generally can't tolerate stuff like that. It seems...mean-spirited or something. But then again, I've been told I have no sense of humor. :tongue And I'm okay with that.

I heard a show on...NPR  I think. Where they were talking about reality TV. And in Poland (if I remember correctly) they have a version of "So, You Think You Can Dance" but it's called "You Can Dance: Just Dance". I thought...hey, that's pretty awesome. I mean, start out with the positive and encourage them. :D Interesting how different cultures are motivated. Apparently Americans (among others) have to be made to feel like they're going to be ridiculed if they fail at something in order to get them do anything.

ETA: I feel like I've had this convo here before...if so, just mute me.

We need a reality show with writers. Something on Bravo or Chiller. We start with a group of writers and give them a topic and word limit to work with. Then, they write and submit in a day or whatever. The submissions get put on the website that week and fans can read all the submissions, just like the judges.

The rest is like a usual game show, with people getting the boot.

*panics at thought this might get commissioned*

I hope you are joking.

And I hope that even if you are joking, you are nevertheless passing this around the networks... :D
