I don't know if they are an American thing which has been transferred to the UK, but there are salons here now where you can take dogs in and get them dyed colors, have various kinds of semi-precious stones attached, and generally make them look like living My Little Ponies... It's rather strange.
I know of this strange ritual. I believe it originated in Japan and migrated to the U.S. so rich people and elderly shut-ins could humiliate their dog, too.

BTW, I am watching Silent Hill (yes, the really terrible film adaptation) and... it isn't bad. As a horror film, that is - as an adaptation, it is abysmal, but the two female protagonists are good, the effects are (on the whole) interesting, and the monsters are creepy. I like this better each time I sit through it, which means either a) my taste is getting worse, or b) it isn't as bad as the reviews people have written would indicate. YMMV massively.

Even for the Hounds, this is kind of odd....
