I am writing a novel where I have two refugees from France fleeing to New York. Once they arrive in the city, where would one go for food and shelter? Were there Red Cross centres? Any help much appreciated. It is set in 1944.

I'd start by looking at Jewish organizations in New York who were helping the Jews who had fled Europe during the rise of the Nazis. I think that will probably lead you in the right direction to what you're looking for.
