What's your experience in publishing? How do you plan on handling distribution and publicity? What are your royalty rates?

Apparently the domain has only recently been registered and no site is currently up and available as www.exilepublishing.co.uk.

Interestingly, there was a company called Exile Publishing Limited in the UK, which got dissolved in June last year. I'd be interested to know whether Patrick had any connection with that company or is seeking to revive the company name.

ExilePublishing:
I am Patrick McCleary, I recently started my own publishing company.

How recently is recently? It's just that you apparently posted in this community in December 2012 seeking advice on how to run your company. This does not inspire confidence.

http://en.jo1jo.com/vb2/showthread.php?t=942391

I think the standard advice to wait and see whether they're still around in 2 years and if so, what sales have been like, holds true in this instance.

Why do you need a C.V.? Why does an author's non-writing-related work history matter? Or are you only accepting mss from the previously published, in which case you're asking for their credits?

What does it mean to say "if a book has great commercial viability" you'll be willing to publish a print version? Do you plan to mostly publish books which are not especially commercially viable?

Dear All,

First and foremost as you have all gathered I am new publisher, I am looking for some titles to publish in the coming months. I will try to answer all your questions briefly and frankly as I do not want to waste anyones time.

As to your other question of my publishing background, the honest answer is not much. I am myself writing a book, some months ago(maybe a year) I had conceptionalised creating my own publishing company in order to publish my own book. This changed over time to me also wanting to promote and publish other authors. Saying this most of the services such as proof reading, editing , cover design etc will all be carried out by professionals that I have already decided to work with.

As I am just starting I have decided to work with a larger publisher in order to provide the proper distribution , when I feel I am ready I will handle this myself. Though I think I have chosen the best option.

As to the matter of this other company, they have no relation to me. Infact when I contacted my lawyer to order to have my company properly registered he brought this to my attention. I have still not registered my company yet, but It will be done this week.

The website will be completed and running within the next few weeks. It was supposed to be completed on the 1st of January but I had some issues with my web designer, these issues resulted in us parting ways and me having to find a new web designers.

Any further questions please send me a private message or post it hear.

Thank you

Patrick McCleary

I forgot a question. I asked for a CV as I wish to get to know my authors very well, a CV says a lot about a person. To me being a author and being signed to a publisher is a job, how many employers employ an individual without a CV.

The writer/publisher relationship is more like an independent contractor/employer relationship.

In that situation, independent contractors generally have the opportunity to find out significant information about their employer before deciding to apply for work with them. I would suggest that the ball is in your court to get your information out there first.

I would also encourage you to proofread your professional communications (like your posts here) more thoroughly. Professional communications from publishers should be free of spelling, punctuation, and syntax errors.

There used to be an Exile Editions working out of Toronto which published some gorgeous books in the late 1980s--I don't know if it's still going but even if it isn't, it would have been wise for this publisher to choose a different name to avoid confusion.

You are right about Exile Editions but I think my name is sufficiently different enough to avoid confusion. Also I have already paid my graphic designer to create my full corporate package, I cannot afford to loose that much money.

Patrick, since you admit to knowing practically nothing about publishing, then PLEASE consider not accepting new authors. You have no idea how hard publishing is. We go in with a romantic notion of making the world safe for literature, and most go down in flaming wrecks. Worst of all, they take their authors down with them.

Go ahead and self publish your book and experience the whole process of book production (it's far from free), marketing, promotion, and distribution. There is nothing romantic about publishing. It's grueling, hard work, and takes a LOT of money. The flip side is that it's also exhilarating and fabulous - but that's only if you know what you're doing. And you don't.

Please rethink your decision.

I did not say I know nothing, he asked what my practical experience in this field was. I have made all the right contacts, and I have done my research. I beleive publishing your own book and publishing the book of others is two different things, either way I will have my work cut out.

I thoroughly beleive in this company, and I am sure once I publish my first book I will also change your mind.

Saying this most of the services such as proof reading, editing , cover design etc will all be carried out by professionals that I have already decided to work with.

Where did you find these professionals, and how are you funding your publishing endeavours? You'll need to pay these people, and good editing and so on doesn't come cheap.

As I am just starting I have decided to work with a larger publisher in order to provide the proper distribution , when I feel I am ready I will handle this myself. Though I think I have chosen the best option.

Which larger publisher have you decided to work with? Have you already approached them and asked if you can piggy-back onto their services like this, or are you just assuming it'll be ok? How do you imagine a larger publisher will distribute your work for you, when most publishers actually pay distributors to do this work for them? How do you intend to distribute your books yourself? And how are you going to do that and make a success of your books when bookshops much prefer to work with distributors direct?

I did not say I know nothing, he asked what my practical experience in this field was. I have made all the right contacts, and I have done my research. I beleive publishing your own book and publishing the book of others is two different things, either way I will have my work cut out.

I am sure that I will not change my mind. I have seen many new publishers appear here and insist that they know what they are doing, even when it's clear that they do not. It seems to me that you have very little understanding of publishing; and that chances are your publishing company is going to fail to sell many books at all. Please consider Priceless1's advice. She knows what she's talking about and her advice is well intentioned.

Patrick, it was pointed out that you were seeking advice about running a business as late as last month:
http://en.jo1jo.com/vb2/showthread.php?t=942391

I'm sure that you won't change my mind. How experienced are your editors, cover designers, sales and publicity staff? Who distributes your books? How many titles do you plan to publish this year? What kind of print runs do you plan on doing? Will you be sending out ARCs to reviewers and media? How do you plan on marketing and promoting your titles? What is your business model?

I still think it's much kinder to yourself and to anyone else you may sign that you first publish your own book and see how well it goes. If you sell 10k units and have national distribution, then I'd say you had a good handle on things. But for now, it's all your word with zero back up, and it's hard to take you seriously without some solid answers.

No, it isn't a job. You get paid for a job (and that payment has to be at least minimum wage). Given that you apparently can't afford to do a website redesign, I'm guessing you're not going to pay advances, so you're asking people to take a risk that you can sell their books. So far, I don't see anything from your posts here to reassure me that you can.

If you're going to want to know someone's CV, then you should be equally prepared to put up your own CV for their inspection. The fact that you don't have any qualifications about maybe, possibly, at one time having wanted to maybe self-publish, does not fill me with confidence. Judging from your posts here, I sincerely hope that you are not going to edit manuscripts yourself.

All the information you have requested will apear on my website in due course.

You may want to hold off soliciting authors until you have your website up and all the info available. If authors can go to a professionally designed website, and see a list of staff with their professional creds and the information regarding the large, established press who will be providing distribution for your books, that will go a long way. However, in the absence of that concrete info, authors will probably choose to submit to already-established presses.

With regards to the cv: when I interview for a job, they certainly want to see my cv, but my cv is only for my professional credentials in my field (which happens to be the biological sciences). They want to see my scientific publications, not my short story pubs. So you may want to consider asking authors for a list of their previous publications and anything else that may be relevent to their manuscript, rather than a day-job cv.

I'd plan on self-publishing a book entitled, "How I Made $37 in Book Publishing."

Count on getting lots of discouragement here, Patrick. These folks have been 'round the pasture and know where the crabgrass is.

Good luck. I hope you talk yourself out of this. I hope you get a job with a publisher and put in lots of years to learn how it works.

Yet more proof that 'publisher', like 'agent', is not an entry level job.

Going by FB, website launched in Apr '12. And was set to relaunch Sept '13, but domain is now expired. No trace of anything published.
