Does anyone know anything about them? I found them Dutrope. I don't know how reliable they are though. It looks like you have to buy their books from SmashWords, Amazon, and All Romance. I heard somewhere on here that was a red flag. They only want 2500 words as a minimum for their short stories, which I don't is that bad given that some places require 5000. I don't know too much else about them though.

Here's their website : http://naughtynightspress.com/

From their About Us page:

Who We Are:

Naughty Nights Press team members, all authors themselves, bring you this unstoppable, spicy opportunity in the form of a new digital publisher, operating from the other side of the coin. We will bring NNP authors the understanding of what it means to have a publisher who "gets it" from the author's point of view.
NNP wants to give those aspiring authors a chance that other publishers have passed over because of their lack of experience. The NNP team will gently guide the "new generation of authors" into the yet untapped portion of the erotic ebook market at a new level of scorching hot reading for the future!

So they're all authors with no experience of publishing, and they're aiming for an as-yet untapped portion of the erotica market. I'm not sure there is an as-yet untapped portion of the erotica market: there are lots of publishers who specialise in this genre, and their coverage is very broad.

I see nothing on their website which would make me put them on my submissions shortlist.

NOTE: The opinions below are just that, my opinion and impressions from a casual look through the website. I'm not trying to be mean or especially snarky.

*Sigh*

And yet again an "About Us" that says nothing to identify the management.

The site itself is not professional. Ditto the cover art.

The one excerpt I glanced at makes me imagine the following has much hidden meaning:

We will bring NNP authors the understanding of what it means to have a publisher who "gets it" from the author's point of view.
NNP wants to give those aspiring authors a chance that other publishers have passed over because of their lack of experience.

Perhaps publishers who don't "get it" are ones who've rejected them or asked for copious revisions during editing.

My guess is being passed over because "lack of experience" ties in to not being able to produce clean enough prose that makes a publisher want to invest time and money into the work.

I like your word choice when describing the erotica market.

That depends on what you want to publish. An erotic short story I assume? Duotrope always has a lot of anthology listings.

Hello

It's my first night here and I joined due to being directed to this particular topic by a very good friend.

It seems that people are down on Naughty Nights Press and, as an author published with them, I thought it would be a good idea to let people know about them from a members point of view.

Although they are a fairly new (just under six months old) publisher they already have a number of excellent ebooks under their belt, as well as a number of very talented authors. They work closely with each individual author to ensure the highest quality releases only, their editors are extremely talented, and very thorough people, who only pass the highest quality writing, they identify the correct market for each individual story they receive and issue review copies accordingly. All this as well as helping the authors find many other avenues for promotion of their work.

In fact this company isn't one that leaves their authors to fend for themselves this company is one that does everything in it's power to make each author successful , and not every company can say they do that.

Yeah. That's what I want to publish. I've used Duotrope, and I don't really know how successful it's been for me so far, no offense.

Duotrope is just a market list. You can find markets for the genre and length. You can see what their response and acceptance rate is, that is all. Erotica shorts slot into a few markets, mainly anthologies, subscription sites and a few magazines with very specific niches.

It kind of depends on the story, other than that.

Welcome!

If you could give us some concrete examples, that would help a lot. Names of editors, experience, titles, any outstanding sales rankings, where their ebooks are for sale, etc., etc. Thanks.

Julez,

I can't agree with you more. Naughty Nights Press has been more than professional. They have been hands on an extremely helpful in all aspect of their publishing. I have a short story in their current anthology and I have nothing but positive things to say about the entire experience.

Even though I'm new, I have tons of experience dealing publishers from my other writing and the everybody at Naughty Nights Press has shown me that they not only know what they are doing but the have a great deal of respect for the writer.

Honestly, after working with them on this anthology, NNP will always be the first people I send my future works to.

NNP

Does anyone know anything about them?

Yes. I'll give you my personal experience rather than a guess.

I also have a story published in their current holiday anthology, Doing the Naughty List, Twice. I know that of all the publishers who have accepted my work, NNP is the one that has bent over backwards to make me feel like a valued part of the team. I know that Gina Kincade goes the distance to be sure her authors get the best of everything..her time, editing, promotion and personal attention. I've never felt like one of the herd at NNP. Do add them to your short list of publishers you submit to. ;-)

Again, not going out of my way to be offensive or wish a new company ill will, but the editing I saw in the excerpts I looked at was not up to par.

I found a lot of issues that should have been covered in the first round of editing. Awkward, run on sentences, unnecessary word repetition, excessive dialogue tags.

Well - I decided to become a member because

I was informed of this post and it really angered me. I realize there are a lot of publishers out there with zero clue and leading folks into a level that in truth is a lie. Naughty Nights Press is not one of those. I am not only a published author with then but with another firm and both stand out in my mind. Questioning a firm is okay but certainly you need to make sure you have your facts straight before you spout off in any forum. NNP does indeed give new authors a chance - I think that's one of the excellent points about the company. How many writers long to have an opportunity? We've all been there as published authors. NNP strives to achieve the best in what they do from their professional handling of edits, marketing, presentations and the people they hire to handle everything from cover work to promotions.

I can only say having worked with the firm that I am pleased and ecstatic to work with them in the future.

I suggest you consider whatever information you received as false. Please - ask me any questions you would like.

As writer's I think we can agree that a thick skin is necessary to prevent taking offense to harsh criticism. Or even light criticism.

I wouldn't take the above as NNP being thrown into the chipper-shredder. Rather, take it as a dissection. It is a lot of experienced people erring on the critical side of warning people about what they might get themselves into.

If you know the industry as much as I am sure you have to to be where you are, you will understand how virulent and widespread scams and less-than-reputable institutions are.

In conclusion... don't be mad. Be dissapointed, and ready to prove them wrong.

I realise that this is only opinion, but I must say that I can't help but notice that, with one negative comment, everyone is quick to jump on the bandwagon. As one of the new authors Cassandre speaks about, I am thrilled about the opportunity to work with NNP. Every single person with NNP goes out of their way to help each author make an informed decision, and we are encouraged to ask as many questions as we want, provided it hasn't already been answered on their site of course.
Before jumping to a negative conclusion, maybe people should ask NNP directly about what is on your mind and make up their own decisions? Submitting to NNP was one of the best things I have done to date. They're new, and they're taking the erotica world by storm.

I do agree, that we have to develop a thick skin. But this doesn't seem like dissection, because it doesn't seem that anyone is willing to step forward and contact NNP. That's my issue with this. Get in contact with them, and the authors who are published with them first.

And I simply am tired of the negativity with so many authors. There are plenty of publishers who truly deserve to receive a bad rap and you bet I could name several. Not only am I a published author but I hold a position elsewhere in the industry so I am allowed to see what authors do not. I have no issue defending and given what i know NNP is doing everything to move into the future in a positive method. As I said before - ask... hmmm

Barbara - I understand but in truth I've seen this a heck of a lot including established publishers such as Samheim and Loose ID - and dear God the dreaded Decadent. Product of the industry that needs to change.

I wasn't jumping on any bandwagon. However, in the small amount of history that I have this forum, especially this section, I have learned a few things to look out for, i.e. a red flag. That's not to say I won't submit to them, but that I need to be careful and be sure that's who I want to submit to. A few minutes after I posted this thread, or close to it, I ran into a thread that mentioned one of the things they said on the site as a red flag. I even said that in my first post.

I'm not discrediting or discouraging NNP at all. I just want a better of idea of them.

I'm glad I received both negative and positive takes on them. I think that's good. It lets me look at the company from another point of view.

This particular sub-forum on Absolute Write is dedicated to Bewares, Recommendations, and Background Checks. As such, it's going to be a bit on the critical side for any publisher/agent. That's just the nature of this sub-forum.

It's also worth taking a look at the index thread and noting all the publishing companies listed in gray... those are publishing companies that have folded. Many started out with good intentions--and still folded, often tying up the intellectual property of authors.

That's not to say that this will be the fate of Naughty Nights Press... but this is a sub-forum that cautions authors to be careful and think before they place their work. So yes, folks here aren't going to wave the pom-poms and say "New Press! AWESOME!!!"

They're going to say "Huh. What background do they have? What's their business plan? How's the contract? What sort of promotion are they doing? What are their products like? Will they be around in a year?"

The questions here aren't a slam against the owner or the authors as people. They're just, more or less, the same set of concerns that pop up whenever a new press opens its doors.

As I read this thread I see very close minded responses when it comes to 'Bad Reviews' of a young company.

To be honest Naughty Nights Press are an extremely young company growing rapidly with many multi-published authors coming to them because of the way they conduct themselves. Now if you look at that, then you'd think people would realize that if these people are coming to them despite what some people may think as bad editing or bad this, that or the other it would give them some credit.

I personally have seen so many companies take and never give back whereas NNP give everything for the author and their books.

If people don't want to be part of something that is still growing unlike these already established publishers that don't pay attention to their authors then so be it, but remember that just because you don't like it doesn't mean everyone else will.

Personally NNP is my first choice and many of my other author friends first choices because what they offer. I suggest if you have questions for the company, want to know more then ask the company. Don't go around saying this and that about something you haven't done your research in.

Just saying.
