Thread: Authors should really stop telling readers how to give reviews

I just read all twelve pages of that clusterfuck and I have no idea what the hell is going on there. He strikes me as the classic pig-headed person who is incapable of admitting to any wrong doing, so they simply keep plowing ahead professing their moral superiority despite all evidence to the contrary.

I'm also pretty confused as to why he thinks having so many page views on his blog is such a positive thing. Just because somebody stopped to rubber-neck at his crash and burn site doesn't mean that there's going to be any sustained positive impact on his career.

    Why?

I'm honestly asking. Thousands (if not millions) of people use Goodreads every day without a single bit of drama. It can be a good way to interact with readers and reviewers, and it's useful for organizing my virtual bookshelf.

    *bolding mine*

This is what the rational part of my brain keeps saying. The other part of my brain, the former-stalking-victim, anxiety-ridden, panic-attack-prone part of my brain, freezes up and wants to run hide in a corner.

It probably wouldn't have such a negative impact on me if I hadn't spent several years being afraid for myself and my family and looking over my shoulder every time I left the house (and jumping at every sound when I was in my house).

I probably just need to wait for some of the drama to blow over (and hopefully it will blow over soon).

Holy crap at "you people are diluted." It took me all my strength not to log into goodreads and post "your posts are acidic!!" in response.

Definitely not, but I can't ever resist a dumb joke.

Just finished reading that whole thread; my favorite bit was the "I'm being hacked! THIS is why I am making public the list, this is why I am more moral than--oh, Facebook, never mind, I was WAY off base!" bit.

I admit I did have a "yeah, well you're condensed!" float around in my head as retort.

I finally finished reading all of the pages, and I lost track of the plot somewhere around page 7.

    Yep.

Drop the hammer on these punks. Let's see how tough they are trying to explain themselves to serious law enforcement officials who don't give a whit about reviews or Goodreads.

Punks and cowards, all of them.

The one that got me was this comment from Carroll: What if I killed myself over this? Would SHE or THEY be responsible?

That one comment encapsulates the entire blog post and the comments. He does not understand that HE would be responsible. Nobody else, just him.

Yes, that comment just went to a whole different level in the conversation, even next to Jennifer's racist/sexist comments.

    Um... wow.

OK, no way am I reading through that entire clusterfsck to get the context, so please clarify: does "this" refer to "a group of teenage bloggers that he's never met in person publicly refusing to read or review any of his books?"

    Yes. Mindboggling, huh?

And if there was ever any doubt of him being a psychopath, he kindly posted a charming anecdote about how he threatened to burn down someone else's house to dispel our skepticism.

As far as I can tell, yes.

Some details that I think are relevant to all of this: As I mentioned above, if his blog is truly written by him and reflects his version of reality, he has a documented mental illness and in the very recent past has spent time in a mental facility. Also, one of his books is apparently a "forbidden romance" between a 28-year-old man and a 16-year-old high school student.

This doesn't appear to me to be just an author behaving badly. Unless his blog is one big, well-planned, well-thought-out-over-a-period-of-six-months publicity stunt, everyone concerned is lucky the worst thing to come of this is the blog post under discussion.

Not reading the thread. There's enough shite in my RL. However, whether this is his blog or on GR, does anyone know if he's been reported to the site that hosts his blog, or to GR's owners? This is crossing so many boundaries.

I've been flagging the more egregious posts, and I gather others have been as well. But the GR admins aren't in on weekends, and tend to be somewhat opaque in what they do. It's not clear what will happen, or when.

    Yeah.

I'm sort of calling shenanigans on that one. He sounds like a guy with a very small penis trying to sound like a big man bragging about crimes he probably only committed in his head.

Which looks like a very empty place.

Hopefully the GR admins will deal with it. OTOH it's better than watching more coverage of the movie attack.

But if one building is infested with great big cockroaches and the rats that feed on them, to the extent that the tenants are afraid to come home: get in a really good exterminator, or tear the place down. Last week it was that furor over a librarian screwing with the lists, this week it's this. Absentee landlords are never a good thing.

But this mess has been going on all week.
"It's not clear what will happen, or when". If anything. Maybe GR admins also believe 'any publicity is good publicity'? Or, some nonsense about the site 'belonging to the users'?

I have never been so pleased with, and grateful to, the AW site and the fine Moderators here. I cannot imagine this nonsense carrying on here, once the Admins caught wind of it. Ban-hammers coming down would sound like 'The Anvil Chorus'.

By all accounts Goodreads is a fine place, except in this little area, which seems pretty much confined to, what - YA and maybe Romance? And self-published authors, reviewers, etc within those groups? So, publicly ban about a dozen of the worst offenders (threats, language, etc) and most likely the rest will shape up.
They're self-pubbed, or they have little book-blogs. They need GR more than GR needs them.

Sorry for the rant. I should just stay away, this is none of my business.

I don't want to get into this too much, but this author talks exactly like someone I knew who was a major pita, a petty criminal and a crank, full of stories about how amazing and bad-patootie he was, puffed up and egotistical. He tried to spin a grandiose imaginary life of mysterious and exotic excitement for anyone he could corner. He committed real crimes, but dumb ones, and basically alienated everyone he met except for a few sad and, sorry to say, gullible souls.

For that and other reasons this author has set off many alarm bells.

I suspect him of sock-puppetting at least two of the alleged young women who have viciously attacked other women on that Goodreads thread, including the ostensible former child model ex-fiancée who is still insanely loyal and pornographically brutal to any female critics of him.

Did it strike anyone else as odd how "Jennifer," the ex-fiancée, amidst all of her profanity and threats to women on that thread, complains bitterly multiple times that none of the author's friends are defending him?

It makes little sense. She and "Ira," another alleged young girl who, the author said, he allows to post from his account sometimes (!), have both been passionately defending him (while showing a remarkable amount of knowledge about his affairs).

But if they are actually sock puppets then he would be aware that no one apart from he himself is rising to his defense, which would account for the bitterness.

Given his string of comments on page twelve...

All of his claims about Those Evil Bloggers Who Stole My Book And Then Didn't Review It are total bullshit.

This is about a grown-ass man who entered into an online relationship that could be interpreted in the kindest light as "inappropriate" with a teenage girl who ran a book blog. After a time period during which this relationship continued, said grown-ass man decided it would be funny to be even more inappropriate. Teenage girl didn't like that, and was understandably hurt and upset, and told her friends, who understandably decided they wanted nothing to do with this man and did not want to help him promote his books.

Grown-ass man then stews over this for MONTHS and decides the way to handle it is to publicly accuse them of stealing from him rather than admitting his own lousy behavior caused them to not want his grown ass on their blogs.

This has nothing to do with bloggers soliciting books and then not reviewing them. This has to do with a grown man making himself so unpleasant to deal with that people decide not to review his books.
