The teenagers' behavior in all of this seems to be age-appropriate. His reaction really does make one want to look him straight in the eye and say, "Aren't you supposed to be the adult here? Start acting like one."
She developed a crush and asked for a picture? That right there should be sending up all kinds of flags. Instead of holding firm to a 'no', he sent fake photos and she got upset and reacted like a teenage girl who'd been turned down. So did her friends, who I'd assume were also teenage girls.

Leaving aside all kinds of issues I have all over that scenario, I think the safest thing for me to do is to retreat back to my corner of SF/F. This pool is starting to resemble fandom too creepily for my comfort.

Well, duh, Stacia. Of course he didn't. It's hard to be righteously indignant in the face of rational levelheadedness.

This guy is an A-1 prime asshole with delusions of grandeur, who doesn't seem to understand that threatening teenage girls is not the way to raise the standards of online behavior. He keeps talking about their good character and how he's doing them SUCH A FAVOR by publicly shaming them.

Again, makes one want to say to him: "Dude, you can't have it both ways. Either these kids are of good character and you're being an asshole, or these kids are not of good character and you're being an asshole. See the constant there? Good. Now STFU."

I find it rather entertaining. Sometimes I even get story or character ideas. I think we need some pizza and wine with that popcorn. It doesn't look like it'll end anytime soon.

Yep. It's like the "People of Walmart", isn't it? You're horrified by what you're seeing, but you just can't look away.

Oh, and I like pepperoni on mine.
I'm super poor, but live in a very affluent part of California because I still live with my mom while I go to Uni. Our closest Walmart is twenty minutes away, but still in a great, safe part of the county. So when I was eighteen, I wanted some new weights and thought, heck, I've never been to a Walmart, why not? It was honestly like I traveled through time and space, like it was the eighties and I was magically in a town with a population of 200. But I digress.

Anyways, if I was that girl's dad I would be extremely angry, with both parties. Maybe it's because I'm still relatively young, and I used to work in a coffee shop, but the second the words ''teenage girl'' and ''crush'' are mentioned I'd back up. Apparently he's confirmed that the whole ''picture'' incident as true, which raises my eyebrow. If he wouldn't give a recent picture, only older ones, then he was attempting to be deceptive about his age. He refused to give her a recent picture, and instead sent a picture of someone else ''as a prank,'' because he didn't want an underage girl he met on the internet to see what he actually looks like? It's just... concerning.

Also the whole ''all of my group mods are underage'' quote is giving me the creeps.

I know this isn't a nice thing to say, but this guy . . . isn't all there. His blog is a little scary. Not to mention hypocritical. For example, ttp://carrollbryant.blogspot.com/2012/03/carrolls-journal-12-meximelt.html this entry about Tiger Woods and his mistress:

And it’s not that I don’t think porn actresses should not be given their basic human dignity and **cough** respect, but to sue Tiger Woods for lying and misleading? You’re telling me that this girl didn’t know she was being used?

    Really?

So what if Tiger lied to her? So what if he promised her the moon? It happens all the time in everyday life.

Anyone seeing the parallels here? And from reading this guy's blog--he's right when he says on Goodreads that people don't know the whole story, which he airs in its full tawdry glory on his blog. This whole thing is just a nasty dogfight over a failed relationship, and it's somehow picked up steam in the wake of the STGRB fiasco.

If his blog is an accurate picture, he's got a real mental illness and a fetish for teenage girls, combined with an inability to maintain proper boundaries. I almost feel sorry for the girls who got mixed up with him on Goodreads.

I'm probably going to stay the fuck out of this thread for a while...perhaps forever. I have my own issues with confrontation and bullying, and reading this escalation of insanity doesn't help.

    Quote round-up and revelation

Sorry for so many posts in this thread :/ Here's a TLDR quoted version of the thread on goodreads quoting the stuff I found most concerning.

Confirmation that he was in fact reluctant to send an actual picture to the underage girl, and ended up sending a fake picture as a prank:
When you're right, you're right Alessandra, and you're right. In the past, i did step out of character a time or two but this isn't about emotion or retaliation or anything like that.
Fragment of the post that originally got my attention:
My group mods are evident of that [stating that he's not just out to get young people]. They are all under the age of 18 and they read, they blog, so...But my friends on [GR] have great character. That's why they are my friends. That's why I love them and would do anything for them if they asked...They are learning. And they learning through me. I don't take that responsibility lightly. I value their opinion and their friendship.
Ends up Stacia probably hit it right on the money:
Only in the past 5 maybe 6 hours did I get 2800 views and all of these comments. Why all of a sudden now? I wasn't even giving this post a second thought until this sudden explosion. I had no idea this would turn out as it has. None.
Back to the underage girl/crush debacle. Says:
Again, this post has nothing to do with her. Good greif.
    And then says:
Yes it did start with the "one" person[referring to the underage girl]. And all my efforts to get the others to not back out failed.
Also is a part of STGRB:
I used to be a part of that website and left because I am not against "bad reviews".

However, none of this was the most concerning to me. Instead, it was this:

Good point, Laura. Duly noted. I'll have Ira look into it because she is the "technical" brains of my blog. LOL
I thought- who's Ira? Ends up here's where things get weird(er).

Ends up Ira is a co-contributor (by blogger sites standards) and possesses the main account that Carroll's author blog is under, which is hosted by google's blogger. She runs two other blogs: one for poetry, which Carroll also contributes to, and one strictly about religion, which he is not. To the shared blog, they both contribute quotes. Ira's are usually of a spiritual nature, while Carroll's are often mundane, about things like inventing dijon ketchup.

Anyways, ends up congratualtions are in order, because Ira just graduate high school this month. So yes, as I suspected, his blog is run by a high school teenager.

What an entitled attitude he has. I don't give two fucks about supporting his career. Just because you give me a copy of your book, or offer to send me one, I'm not obligated to review it.
What if those bloggers were trying to be tactful about his book? 'If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all'? Would he have been happier if they had written something less-than-glowing? I'm betting not.

Ok, I may be a bit sleep-deprived here (toddler still doesn't sleep through the night) but does anyone else suspect this guy posted his little tirade in order to...oh, I don't know...maybe take advantage of the current Goodreads drama and get a bit of attention for himself?????

"I've been wronged! (by sneaky children no less!)" "Stay tuned! More drama to come, (as I commit career suicide)!" and "I'm getting so many hits/sales, etc." and "I've changed my mind! I shall keep my dirty laundry private!"

Methinks he may believe in the 'any publicity is good publicity' theory...

Oh look, a potty-mouthed user with a female name and avatar has shown up and is throwing around profanities, the "c-word," and unveiled threats to all the "f-ing" "c-words" who are defending that "Mexican c-word."

    http://www.goodreads.com/author_blog...authorblogpost

The threats are to expose them as sock puppets.

Cough. Personally, in my opinion, this is chutzpah. Irony, at least.

The "user" has two friends, one of whom is the OP, 2 books, and her profile in its entirety is
"A college graduate of USC. A former child model. I currently own my own business. I'm in love with an amazing guy. I just bought a poodle and named him Noodle. (Noodle the poodle) I like to read, but only sparingly. "
    User "Belle notes:"

Jennifer, I noticed you only joined Goodreads in July 2012, have only rated Carroll's books, and are addressing questions raised in a comment that was deleted a good half an hour before your own comment. Interesting.

You're a saint for trying to insert some sanity, Alessandra. I have to wonder what Carroll is going to do when he wakes up and sees this mess on his hands.

    yet another edit:

    Okay, so...wait.

Is this about badly behaving teen book bloggers or isn't it?

Is this about a group of teen book bloggers who did him/other self-published authors wrong or isn't it?

Is this about a young blogger or a YA adult blogger who reacted poorly to his 'prank' or not?

Because he's flipping and flopping all over the comments. In one he indicates he's talking about making teen bloggers more responsible for their actions and in the other he's waving his arms and saying it's not underage bloggers he's going after; he's wiggling and jiggling about it not being about the spurned blogger when he gave indication that this list is what it arose out of.

I mean, dude, come on. Can we at least have a little consistency in the story? Or at least, you know, have more than the vagaries which are proving to be inconsistent because he's being cagey with the details?

The more this goes on, the worse it's looking in general.
