Hi all,

A friend of the family (a well known sports figure/author who is a little tied up right now) recommends an agent and his agency. The agent/owner doesn't rep my genre, though another of his agents does.

Do I query the owner and expect him to pass it along?

Do I query the owner and ask him to pass it along?

Do I query the other agent and name drop?

Thanks for any advice as this is a big time agent and agency and I don't want to screw it up. . . .

Best,

Steve

Query the owner/agent as that is who your personal connection is with. The owner/agent will pass it on to the person most appropriate.
It would be very helpful if your friend of the family could send this agent an e-mail refering you before you submit.

Thanks! I did query the owner, keeping my fingers crossed.

Not appropriate at this time to approach the family friend for a direct referral. Either he'll be very busy for the next month or so after this evening, or very persnickety. Wrong genre, too. Sports autobio for him, illustrated children's chapter book for me. . . .
