Not just Americans. Anyone outside the Commonwealth.

You could always pull a Carol Shields and move to Canada.

Is it living in a Commonwealth country or holding a nationality that is part of the commonwealth?

Moving isn't going to help; you have to a citizen of that country. See the rules.

Why do think I'm applying for British citizenship? ;)

(Don't know how Carol Shields got on the shortlist. You always had to be a citizen. Maybe she has dual citizenship.)

ETA: she married a Canadian and became a Canadian citizen.

Shields must have had dual citizenship then; she won the Pulitzer while living in Canada. Or do you just have to be American for that?

She's the only writer I know of who pulled that off. Only shortlisted for the Booker, though, never won it.

If I ever marry it'll be to a Canadian or Aussie. I want to retain my eligibility. (Yes I could marry a Brit, but sheesh, would you want to stay here? aruna excepted from this question.) ;)

My brother - who is pretty much an illiterate thug, was reading in the back garden one afternoon ....'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep' and said with a bit of a snarl, 'Those hooker robots freak me out less than that bloody Tiger from the Pie book I was reading yesterday.'

You might have to reevaluate your assessment of his literacy. Sounds like an interesting reading list he's got there! :)
