Weird that she has all these past violations, but the pols in California keep using her.

If she'd dirty, so be it. But I don't see how her transgressions here would lead to any political fallout for, say, Diane Feinstein. At worst, it might indicate that Feinstein was a little too trusting, but that's not exactly red meat.

Agreed. Yeah, you could make a minor argument that Feinstein maybe should have been aware, but, really, in the big arena of politics and political campaigning, expecting every candidate to be aware of the background of every political operative is asking more than the possible. Republicans had Jack Abramoff as a major guy for years, without most being aware of his sleaze, and except for a couple who had direct and obvious sleaze deals with him, nobody really could be considered culpable. I doubt there's much smoke here.

This isn't about sleaze. It's about the LA County Democratic organization not knowing how much money it has. They don't know if they can make payroll. One of the most powerful county-level Democratic clubs in the country has just taken a major organizational hit.

Maybe they could pass some legislation to take some funds from the more-fortunate Republican Party (and Greens and Libertarians and Socialists too, I guess) and help out their neighbors. After all, it's not the Dems fault they hired an embezzler. They could call it the Political Party Health Assurance Act of 2011.

Well, it's still a mess:

I think the situation poses an interesting problem, when it comes to campaign donations: if Dianne Feinstein--as an example--really has been wiped out, can people/orgs that donated to her campaign already "re-donate," even though they've already reached their limit? Simple fairness would suggest that they should be allowed to do so, I think. But it will be a problem.

To go along with the suggestion in #6, the parties should start paying a few billion into a special fund each year to protect themselves from things like this. They should pass a law and make them do it. Otherwise, the taxpayers are gonna have to step in and pick up the tab next time one of them gets ripped off. Somebody be sure that gets into the Political Party Health Assurance Act of 2011.
