I won't be anywhere near finishing when I hit 50k, either. I'm at 40k, and things are just picking up steam. It took me almost 30k to figure out what story I was writing...

I have a tendency to write short and add on editing. This thing will be well over 100K, I think, once I go back and do the first edit round. I think of Nano as the first real outline. :) I like editing more than drafting, but I need a skeleton to work from, so this is why NaNo is so helpful for me. I have a wire armature now.

Last time I actually finished, I had 50K at the finish. First edit was 82, then I took out 42K and replaced it with a new 45K by final edit.

I know. I'm just odd.

I'm at 44k, I'm kind of disappointed. By this time last year I was at 55k.

Well I'm hoping I'm at about 35k but not sure as I have been using my Jornada the last few days to write here and there between doing the Thanksgiving thing and doing stuff with my kids. The jornada doesn't have a counter, and I look at words on it as bonus surprise words. :) So basically I'm doing an earlier scene on that and the current scene on my laptop.

Different novels come at different speeds, Jax. Don't compare yourself with others, or even with last year's efforts. Just be proud of what you've already done!

Congrats.
I just passed 50K this morning, but this NaNo has been the stodgiest out of 5 or so I participated in.
It didn't help when halfway the month my 'fast' laptop went blank and I unexpectedly got a new job - which caused me to have one NaNo day with 0 (zero) words.
On the whole, I just moved ahead at the glacial pace of 1,700-1,900 words a day, just enough to stay ahead of the average. I went far faster in the past, but then I fell victim to an anti-writing backlash in December.
This time, I need to continue until I reach 80K by the end of December.

I agree. It's not a race against yester-you, it's a challenge to today-you. :)

My mom and I are going to lunch tomorrow after I finish. I love the idea of celebrating.

Congratulations to all. And for those, like me, who are close but not quite there...

We can do it!!

I am so close - and I am about to go knock the other 4k out in a final marathon of writing - but I just want to say that I had NO idea before this NaNoWriMo how much I enjoyed writing gratuitous sex scenes. lol. Several parts of my story have giant plot holes that I haven't figured out how to patch yet (how to get from point a to b, how to smuggle ill gotten goods off of the ship before they hit port, how the MMC shows he is good and chivalrous by maybe saving a child, or an old lady... or a cat, but is a cat really enough? No clue!) so when I have been without inspiration I have essentially written smut. My characters have only had their actual first kiss in the story, but in another document they have had sex every which way from Sunday. And let me tell you, they are dirty, dirty characters.
So essentially I have 20k of a novel, only 10k of which will likely be usable after edits; 5-10k of notes and scribbles about what should happen, without any clue as to how to make it happen; and roughly 20k of pure, hot, smexy porn. LoL. Maybe next year I will just try to write erotica and actually use all of this hotness in a real story.

Anyone else learn deep, important aspects of their personality this NaNo? :)

Just validated, but no celebrations ahead.
I sort of crawled up to 50K+, but I feel the next post-NaNo 30K should come along easier. Things will happen at a faster pace running up to the climax of the story.
Also I need to get my 'old/fast' laptop fixed so I can move ahead faster.

 Sex can fill a lot of um, holes...

(I didn't say that! :D)

For me, nothing new about my personality, but no matter what I start writing, whether it's a LotR fanfic or a "serious" novel (and this year's effort is neither), there always ends up being a sermon or two or ten included.

I took a creative writing course once and had my non-fantasy reading prof read part of my first draft of a fantasy novel, and the part he considered to be the best writing was essentially a sermon.

Hmm. Wonder if I should make it a life choice or something. :D

(Just for those who don't know, I do have a Master of Divinity, and preach on a regular basis. :) )

I also started writing what I'd hoped would be a light-hearted
traditional fantasy with some serious moments, and it ended up being Robinson Crusoe/The Swiss Family Robinson with magic and dragons and elves and dwarves.

I had a ball writing it, but editing's not gonna be so easy...

Probably the library.
You guys are awesome! :D Congrats!

(Also, I think I went all NaNoWriMo on my Spanish assigments... One-fifth of the course in three days, and still going... NaSpanAssMo? Doesn't have that nice ring to it... :tongue I don't know... At least I'm doing something productive.)

It's done and I've won and it was all so fun and freaking awesome and I don't know about you guys, but I am tired. I think I might need a couple weeks to recharge my sanity before tackling the editing...

And for those who have yet to meet us on the other side, there is one more day left! You can do it!

Lordy I think I went freaking insane. Yesterday at this time I had 33, 466. Then I stayed up till 2 am, then got up early today... did other stuff...dealt with a computer glitch with word (like not opening my nano!) ended up on the downstairs computer, typed in the evening up till right now,

AND I transferred all the little file scenes from my jornada (which was from over the weekend) AND.....

.... and added 10, 475 words to my NaNo and that is just craziness. :e2thud:Going to bed now :e2yawn: and plot in my mind my last 6k for tomorrow. Ugh, it's a lot. I'd pull a "Witty" but it's YA, mostly a National Treasure/Indiana Jones kind of thing.

And Witty ... you crack me up. That is too funny!

Yeah... I'm not winning this thing. Again. But I did beat my best record--I'm at about 32k, and the year before last I only got to about 29k. I could have caught up, I definitely could have won this year, but... I didn't write for 6 days and I just... couldn't handle writing 22k in four days (though I did manage 3k, at least...). Especially with classes. Especially with a final tomorrow (eek!).

This really hasn't been good for my self-esteem, not that that's ever been all that high in the first place. I'm starting to question whether I actually have the discipline to be a professional writer. :(

Anyway, to all who've made the cut and won... CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
